A quiet but caring dragon, Avella was originally the mate of her clan leader when she lost her first clutch of eggs to an attack from several rogue aviars. Distraught, she retreated into the depths of the forest not too far from her clan when they were attacked by another clan, leaving her all alone to discover the remains of their forest home. Utterly alone and terrified, she flew blindly until she came across an abandoned band of hatchlings. Unable to leave them as they were, completely defenceless, she herded them into an empty set of caves. Although she was still grief-stricken, caring for the hatchlings gave her something to do and eased her out of the numblingly chilling state that she had been in before. One day, after she returned from finding food for the hatchlings, she found a large sand-coloured Imperial standing by them. Even though she was only a fraction of his size, and was shaking with terror, she warned him not to hurt them. The Imperial only laughed, and stood aside, apologising for scaring her. He was, he said, Hasamelis. His clan was only a few moments' flight away, and he had heard the hatchlings chirping. Somewhat reassured, she fed the hatchlings. Although she declined his offer to join his clan, she found herself wondering what clan life would be like again after he left. To her surprise, he returned the following day with some food, and repeated his offer. Again, she turned him down, too wary and uncertain as to whether she could trust him. But after a few more times, she decided to accept his offer, and so moved into the clan as a keeper of the hatchlings. Although Avella has a crippling shyness, the other dragons give her a wide berth not out of suspicion or haughtiness but out of respect. She only really talks- and even then, it's haltingly- to Hasamelis, and tiptoes around the others. But she feels as though she can open up more towards her hatchlings, and when she's relaxed and around them, the others have noticed how warm and gentle she is. She is also a skilled artist, and carries around a battered journal for her sketches. |
