Castor has always been afraid. Not of others generally or external threats, no, none of that. He was afraid of himself.

Growing up, he like most Imperial hatchlings was told of the horrors that were Emperors. While other Imperials brushed it off as just something to be mindful of when living with other Imperials long term, he took it to heart, slowly becoming fearful of Imperials and then of himself. Eventually, he decided that it would be best to remain alone forever, for if he joined a clan and died, there was still the possibility of the clan welcoming another Imperial someday, and the risk of that happening was too likely for him to write off.

At the core though, despite how he pushes others away, he does this out of concern for them. He wants to keep them safe, and because of his fears he believes himself dangerous to be around.

And so he isolated himself for most of his early life, and might have done so forever if he hasn't met Kotone. Initially an annoyance to his solitary lifestyle, he grew to enjoy her persistent presence. He regretted not conveying his fondness for her when she left for a short while to explore her talents, and was relieved when she returned expressing a similar fondness for him.

Now they wander Sornieth, aiding dragons and eventually joining the fight against the Shade after a frightening encounter that left Castor struggling to remain pure from a Shade infection, that thankfully was able to be contained before it consumed him, though he now is dependent on a special medicine to keep it at bay.
