Keiro flitted beneath the rib of an ancient creature, long ago devoured by vultures and maggots. Keiro waited for her chattering Gloomwillow Guide to plot a haphazard path, weaving through the ribcage and nearly hitting it twice.

Keiro startled when she heard the crunch of the dead and dried out earth. She spun to see Salor, the nest attendant. “Don’t sneak up that way,” Keiro scolded. She sorted through her alchemist’s pouch and pulled a corked vial. “I could have spilled, and you don’t want to see that mess, trust me.”

Salor wasn’t impressed. “We live in the Abiding Boneyard, dear,” she deadpanned. “It already is a mess.”

“No!” Keiro emphatically slapped her fins to her neck. “Just look at the way the land roils and waves. The neon acid rising from the Wound.”

Salor looked, and chuckled. “You are an odd one,” she sighed. “Come on. It’s time for dinner.”

Keiro’s eyes lit up. She held up her vials. “Can I cook?”

“Plaguebringer, help us.” Salor walked off. “There is a difference between your cauldron and our cooking pot.”

“Not really…” Keiro murmured to herself, following Salor anyway. There was no difference between them at all. She just hadn’t found the right recipes yet.

Keiro was used to being not thought of as a child. Her mother never meant anything malicious by it, of course, she was simply not interested. Keiro was the only of her children to stay with her, the rest of her offspring either going away to different clans or to serve the Plaguebringer like Keiro’s father did. Keiro is perfectly fine with this, of course. She has plenty of company within the clan that are not her immediate family, and her Gloomwillow Guide is her constant companion otherwise.

Keiro was given her name by the oldest Guardian of the clan, the only words Keiro thinks she ever heard her say. As soon as she received her name, she felt her life had a purpose. She was not meant to serve the Plaguebringer, not directly. She was meant to stay with her clan, though she wasn’t sure what to do at first. She only knew whatever she did was for the furtherance of the Plague. All for the clan. All for her mother.

She first tried to be a courier, and she was at first peerless, quick and obedient about her delivery. But Keiro always wanted to do more, to live up to her name. She started stopping too often along the way, looking for things that no one else had seen before, uniting things that had never been together, dividing things that had been one for an eternity. She found her true calling in alchemy, and has been brewing and reducing ever since. Indeed, she brings in a fair amount of coin for the clan, offering services from her rotting cauldron for those dragons willing to pay. She’s kept constant company with herself and her Gloomwillow Guide, and she never seems to be bored. Why should she be? The world is full of things to discover.
