MALLARD: Anas platyrhynchos

Instead of teeth, these dragons use the baleen-like lamellae that lines their mouths as a strainer to sift microorganisms and algae out of water. Often, the muddy water at the bottom of shallow lakes provides an ideal nutrient source, which Mallard dragons access by completely submerging their heads and leaving their tails and rear legs above the water's surface. To keep themselves warm and dry, these dragons invest lots of energy in their feathers. Closest to the skin, Mallards have extremely dense and downy feathers, which trap heat. Their outer feathers form a waterproof barrier that keeps them dry. Mallard dragons regularly preen using waxy secretions from a special gland located at the base of their tails.

Due to their small size and lack of teeth, Mallard dragons are often terrible fighters. Fighting tends to consist of harmless bites and wing hitting that resembles a slap fight. When fighting a larger adversary, Mallards are often reduced to helpless flailing accompanied by enraged glares.
