Murel was adopted into a Nature clan when she was still just a hatchling. Intended as tribute to Gladekeeper, her potential was spotted by an elder of the clan, and she was marked for tutelage under the great warriors. Throughout her youth, Murel's fate remained uncertain. At any moment, the clan elders could have changed their minds and sent her away into the service of a deity she did not worship.

The young dragon proved herself among the warriors. She was big, strong, and her heart was tender and wise. The clan approved of her high esteem of life, and trained her not just in the ways of a warrior, but of an intellect.

Murel was studious, not partial to magic, but hungered for understanding. As her knowledge grew, so too did her influence within the clan. The elders, wary now of this Shadowbinder's daughter, sought to remove Murel from their midst. They couldn't send her to the Gladekeeper, for she would not, even in all her mercy, accept someone unfaithful to her ways.

The elders, deceitful, though Murel was not stupid, devised that Murel should be sent away. She was, after all, a Guardian, and out there somewhere in the world was that thing which she must guard forever. Murel was not deceived, but could see her presence was unwelcome. Opting to avoid a dispute and damages, she packed her meager belongings, and set off to find her home elsewhere.
