The hatchlings breathing restarted, and Nox gingerly placed him in front of his parents. Turquoise and Mabli breathed sighs of relief as their now healthy hatchling was placed before them. He had been brought back from the hungry jaws of death, an almost impossibly difficult feat to achieve. But not even the gratitude and relief that the two coatls effused could mask the feeling that something was not right. Nox could sense it in the air. The hatchling buzzed with magical energy, and it was unnatural. Her stomach lurched as she felt the planes and powers shift as the hatchlings eyes snapped open. They were too dark, too mature, too intelligent, too much. The colors in his teal wings and pale body darkened, resting at the color of the deepest shadows of the pine trees. His wingtips and underbelly pulsed with an eerie light that with every surge turned them more translucent and glassy than solid. The scales across his head and front legs bleached to ivory bone-like plates. His lips curled into a cruel sneer, visage gaining an uncanny resemblance to a skull. "Hello Mother. Hello Father"
Nox had failed. He was living -yes- but he would never be the same. Part of him was gone forever. Zalam was more Shadow than dragon.

Zalam was things that others were not. He did things that they didn't. He wasn't like the others.
He wasn't quite sure which to blame- his personality, abilities, or the fundamental fact that he wasn't what they were. He often decided upon all three.

His name is Arabic (ظلام) transliterated into English, for "Dark". If he gets a mate, name her Zulma (ظلمة) another transliterated word that means darkness in Arabic.
