Icarus

Icarus adjusted the straps on his mechanical wings one last time. He would show them. He would show them all how wrong they had been about him.

Icarus had been hatched in the Southern Icefield. He emerged from his egg with soft, pale white down feathers, much to his parents chagrin. His wings were weak too. Even though their clan lived far from the ancestral home of the Ashfall Waste, the elders in the clan still clung to the old ways, the old superstitions that pale plumage meant disease and brought bad luck to the clan. So any pale coatls were thrown out into the snow to fend for themselves or perish. Sometimes they could be persuaded if it could be proven the dragon was healthy, but with Icarus having weak wings, there would be no convincing them to let him remain in the clan.

Icarus's parents could not bear the thought of sending their newborn son to his death in the snow, so in the dead of night, his father snuck him out, tucked under his wing, and flew until he was no longer in the Ice realm, over to the Sea of A Thousand Currents. He knew that many water clans did not believe in the old ways and didn't exile their young coatls that were born with pale plumage. If only he could find one now that would accept and raise his son.

As the sun rose, it sparkled on the surface of the water and he spied what turned out to be a peaceful clan. He made arrangements for Icarus to join that clan and hoped one day to see him again.

Icarus thrived in his new clan. His wings may have been weak, but his mind was strong. He had a thirst for knowledge and a knack for mechanical things. He built himself a set of mechanical wings that would do all the work and allow him to fly faster and remain aloft longer than any dragon in the clan.

As he grew, he began to wonder about his birth clan. His clan leader told him how he had come to be in the Sea of A Thousand Currents. The more he thought about it, the more he began to feel a burning desire to show his parents clan how wrong they had been about him. He had not carried disease. He had not brought his new clan misfortune. He wanted to show them they didn't need to be afraid of pale coatls.
