Josh Lyman is a man with outward bravado and seemingly ceaseless energy. He's charming, friendly, trips over on daily basis and can talk himself into anywhere but he has a wild unpredictability about him that can be the driving force behind a bill or can just as easily get him into trouble.

His loyalties lie with his friends and family- he wants to badly to protect the people he loves but he knows from experience that he can't, though he'd exchange his life for it if he could. He can't value his own life as much as he should and when he crashes and burns he does so silently, hoping no one will notice.

He's ambitious but he's not out to get power for himself, his ambition is driven by a sense of atonement for surviving when his sister didn't and his fear of disappointing the people that rely on him, which borders on neurotic.
