Water in the desert is absolutely critical. The clan wouldn't be able to exist well without Muir carefully maintaining their water resources

Historically she has spent most of her time in the Waterworks away from the rest of the clan, so she's rather lonely. She'd like to make friends with her co-workers beside the rather dour Miyazaki. It's only since the clan packed up to go to Earth that she met anyone else. However, she's got her hands full building out the Desalinization Plant in their new home, so she doesn't have nearly as much time to socialize as she'd like.

When in lightning, she spent her time in the Waterworks deep below the earth, pulling water from underground reservoirs. She is almost positive that the things she saw down in there were products of her own mind left alone in the dark and isolation.
