A storm was raging in the southern icefield.
AN INSANELY BRIGHT FLASH OF LIGHT!
A CRACKING SOUND AS LOUD AS ALL THE WORLD ITSELF!
The young dragon blinked open his eyes. His egg lay in splinters all around him. Looking straight ahead, he could barely see two other dragons, with eggs as bashed and broken as his. They were sleeping.
He bounded stiffly over to one, nudging it with his nose. It didn't respond. Binary reached out a claw, focused for a second, and a shock went out from the talon and zapped the dragon. Still no response. He stumbled over to the other one, and tried the same tactics. Still nothing.
They must not know they've hatched yet, thought the hatchling, and extended his small wings. There were crackling sounds, and he flapped once to clear all the static. He launched himself, wobbling, into the air.
He felt at home up here. He felt like one of the flashes, and once he roared as the boom sounded, and it sounded like the thunder could have been his hatchmate. He twirled with glee, gaining more joy and energy every time the lightning flashed. In a few minutes, he was going the speed of the lightning itself.
