Although very proud of
the Clan that she helped
create, Aurea never
wanted to be a leader.

Aurea and Sol filled the
leadership roles
gracefully for the first
few years of the
Clan's settlement
but they gladly passed
on those responsibilities
when the time was right.

Presently, Aurea is
comfortably serving her
Clan as Lady Protector
within the Court of Light
but spends most of her
time writing her spellbooks.

The trumpeter swans in the lake startled and took flight into the evening sky as the pair of dragons wondered past.

The Pearlcatcher was trotting along the lakeshore with his head held high and a confident gleam in his eye, he was telling his companion about the time he stared down a Featherback boar — most likely exaggerating the story.

Beside him, the Fae fluttered gracefully in the air around his head. She enjoyed listening to Sol: his voice always had such emotion and charm. She hummed as she listened, not really paying attention to what he was saying.

The fading sunlight was being caught by the gentle lake water and reflecting a brilliant white shine along the edges of the waves. There were clovers and sweet grass just after the pebbly shore of the lake where the dragons were wondering, as they did every evening. Their little Clan; consisting of only each other, did not have a permanent home yet, but they always found themselves walking the shore of this lake near the northern coast of the Sunbeam Ruins in the evenings.

And it was a beautiful evening, the redwood trees were brilliant in the glow of the sunset, the breeze was gentle, and the stars were beginning to appear within the darkened edges of the sky, but it was because of how many times the pair had walked these shores which allowed Aurea to notice something was different.

All it took was the small flicker of light.

The Fae had stopped—she floated in place like a petal caught in a crosswind—and Sol took a few steps before he noticed.

“Rea?” The Pearlcatcher asked as he turned back towards his companion. “What is it?”

Aurea did not answer and instead stared into the trees. The lake shimmered behind her as she waited. A moment of nothing then; just as Sol was about to reach out to her, Aurea's frills shivered in surprise. She turned excitedly to her Pearlcatcher, her wings taking her around his head and back. She flicked her tail in the direction which she had seen it and motioned for Sol to wait and watch. A few tense moments later, he saw it as well.

A small spark of Light magic.

Sol stepped carefully towards the forest, taking slow and measured steps towards where they spotted the flickering of the magical barrier. Aurea kept close to Sol, feeling for the magic ahead of them with her frills. Once the Fae could feel the surging hum of magic, she stopped Sol with a gentle tap of her claw on his muzzle.

"Thanks," the Pearlcatcher chuckled with a bit of nervousness seeping into his voice, "I would have ran right into it, right?"

Aurea made a soft purring sound, comforting Sol, before gliding away from him and closer to the ward. She reached out a claw and physically felt the magical barrier. It was like a vast mirror, reflecting the trees and plants to give the illusion that the forest continued with nothing of interest beyond. But the mirror was cracked, allowing a small bit of the magic to escape as a flickering spark.

Sol was shifting nervously on his feet, passing his pearl from his back claws to his tail. “I don't think there are any Clans over here. Why would a ward be up? And ward so powerful! There aren't even any dragons that frequent this area but us."

Aurea turned her head towards her companion, the Fae could not speak but she had gotten very good at expressing herself with her eyes and frills. She motioned towards the crack in the ward then brought her wings in towards herself.

“What? You want to break the ward?” Sol gasped, his mane fluffing up.

Aurea sent him a look that could not be confused for anything but: well yeah. Obviously.
