Vein - Survivor, Shade Touched

It's a strange feeling.

Watching the world around you move while you don't - while you can't.

It stopped bothering him long ago.

He can still feel the warmth of his homeland on his scales, the bright sunlight on his face, warming him to the core.

Here, the sun doesn't touch the ground.

Here, everything is lit by strange, glowing mushrooms and bioluminescent creatures that giggle at you, watching you from the darkness just out of your line of sight.

That wait for you to slip up so they can swoop in and end you, claiming your life as their prize for catching you unaware.

This place... Was ruthless, unforgiving, moral-less. Everything he had always despised.

He had no choice, though. He had been cast out of every other place, his odd, lifeless eyes, his sick magic, his distaste for everything and everyone around him further made them believe the tales that colorless Coatl were nothing but bad luck.

He lay curled up at the base of a large, vibrant pine when he meets her. She's wandering the darkness in what seems to be perfect contentment, sure she is safe, sure that even with eyes closed the monsters in the darkness can't touch her.

He narrowed his eyes at her.

The darkness took whoever it pleased, without mercy. Her care-free attitude would do nothing but get her killed - or worse.

He rose, shuddering as a wave of agony rippled through his lithe body, black, tar-like goo dripping from his mouth and eyes as he follows the Imperial, curious and resigned to what would surely be her fate.

It's not long before she seems to disappear into the underbrush, her large body swallowed by twisted brambles and intimidating pines. He pauses, eyes wide in surprise at her sudden disappearance. He's just about to attempt to follow when another Coatl steps from the darkness the Imperial had disappeared into, his purple eyes narrowed and a hostile snarl rippling from him. He was large and intimidating, his dark scales crossed by a pearl-white crackle that seemed to move as if it was alive across his scales and grey feathers causing him to reel back in surprise and, to his utter surprise, fear.

He shuddered, his magic curling around him in black, endlessly dark tendrils of sickness, lazy and sticky as it clung to him, 'protecting' him for all it was worth.

The other Coatl stopped a few feet from him, feathers twitching and muscles tensed and ready to attack at the drop of a hat if he needed to.

"You are trespassing." The intimidating male snarled, his words a series of harsh hums - the noises the language of their kind, a language he hadn't heard in a long, long time.

He had long since forgotten how to speak his mother tongue.

"I mean no harm." He murmured in standard Draconian, slowly taking a step back, leaving sticky black footprints in his wake that killed the blue-green grass beneath him in a slowly expanding circle.

Surprise slid across the other Coatl's face and was gone in an instant, his purple eyes regarding the slowly retreating intruder with something like curiosity.

"You are touched by the shade." He murmurs, taking another step closer, his muscles relaxing.

For some reason, this information seemed to calm the Coatl down.

"You were cast out. This is the last place you could run." He continues, the words quiet and contemplative as he slowly rounds around Vein, cutting off his escape routes.

"My home... It is open to you." He's standing before Vein now, purple eyes cold and bored almost as the foliage behind him ripples and slides away, leaving only a long, dark tunnel.

"If you so wish it, we will welcome you." He purred before turning and dashing off down the tunnel, the last thing Vein seeing of him is the brilliant white sliding over black, black scales.

He stands before the entrance to the Coatl's lair for a long time, utterly still and silent as goo slides out of his maw and down his scales, thick and sticky as it plops to the ground.

Would this Clan truly accept him, touched by the shade as he was, tainted, cursed?

He thought back to the two from this clan he had seen. Both were startlingly similar to him and each other - black, white, and grey.

Both just as cursed as he, cursed by colorless scales and feathers.

He shivers, his legs buckling under him and nearly sending him falling to the ground as hope whells up within him, potent and thick and so, so painful.

Could he truly find a home here?

With a quiet whimper, he begins down the tunnel, trembling in fear and hope and wonder and deep, crushing sadness.

He would do his very best to make this place home.

He doesn't think he could handle being cast out again.
