Biography
Fade
The Swift Matriarch
History:
Fade was born within Rotwater Reef, a nest of one within swirling murk, her mother curled around her egg as though it would slip away from her. Just as her siblings had.
Her mother carried the same mantra as most dragons of the Reef: Survive. She was distant and serious, already a complete opposite of the excitable hatchling. She kept Fade at a distance, never getting too close or betraying too much emotion. Though she fed her and kept her safe and warm, she made Fade feel a deep emptiness inside her. A loneliness so powerful it hurt. Yet despite her coldness, she told wonderful stories. Stories that hid lessons and warnings for the hatchling within them, things like always watch your back, never waste food, and don’t hunt more than you can eat.
But her most memorable tale was of a Sea Monster, one with massive blue fins that would snap up hatchlings it caught alone. The image the story scarred into Fade’s mind would haunt her sleep for many nights in her youth.
The day Fade left her nest came with little warning, her mother nudged her away, cold as ever.
“Leave” she had said, face unreadable, “you are not a hatchling anymore.”
Fade left without ever looking back. Her heart burned as the gaping void insider grew wider.
As she wandered the Scarred Wasteland, she came across a pack of Mirrors. One that let her in without complaint. She attempted to speak to some, make friends, anything that would sate the emptiness she felt, but they were just as distant as her mother. The loneliness pierced deeper into her.
The fateful day is one engraved into her memories. The pack was hunting an Undying Featherback, a dreaded beast, pierced with arrows and scarred from past encounters with more unfortunate hunters. The pack had it surrounded; half were directed to attack it with wild, primal spells while the rest were to engage it directly, keeping it distracted.
Fade was one of the direct attackers.
It had been going smoothly. The beast was kept too busy to defend against the magic onslaught, and it seemed to show signs of finally slowing down. Then it got desperate.
The first thing Fade had registered was the white-hot burning in her leg, then the rest of her body slamming into the contaminated Earth. The beast broke into a run, the pack tearing after it. Leaving Fade to watch as they grew further and further away, until they were no longer able to be seen.
Not one looked back.
Not one came back.
The void shattered, bubbling up into a howl of frustration and agony. One that pierced the silent, sickening air.
She wandered once more after that, her leg dragging behind her. She limped and limped, until the Sea of a Thousand Currents was once more in her sight. She had dragged herself all the way back to the Wandering Contagion.
All the way back home.
She stalked along the infected coast. Keeping alert for any beast or bandit that would take advantage of her weakened state. Her leg still burned, unable to move. Soon, she spotted a figure in the distance. One that pierced her mind with horror as an old story tore its way to the front of her mind.
A sea monster, with massive blue fins.
It was much smaller than the monster that she had formed in her head, but still stood large enough to tower over her. She stared at it with terror, watched as it raised its head and surveyed the area. It had come for her, she was alone and it had come to snap her up as it did every hatchling it caught alone. Yet the more she watched it, the more the emptiness burned. A fire began to bubble in the void, and rage consumed her.
She wasn’t a hatchling anymore.
She’d hunt it, kill it, and show that she didn’t need anyone. Drag it back to her pack.
Back to her mother.
With a piercing screech, Fade charged at the blue-finned beast as best as she could with her leg. She lunged, claws outstretched.
Only to be smacked straight in the face with its tail.
When the stars cleared, Fade found herself staring into two blue eyes. As her vision cleared further, she found that what stood in the place of the monster, was a Guardian Dragon.
His massive blue wings folding from their startled position.
A different kind of burning welled into her face.
After a few more moments, the Guardian spoke. He asked for her name, and what she had wanted from him. Still a bit dazed and absolutely embarrassed, Fade answered and demanded the same. To her surprise, the Guardian answered her.
Oceanrun.
The two took shelter together for the night. Fade was curious of this dragon who had actually spoken back openly to her, and Oceanrun worried about the Mirror’s current state. They began to speak more.
And Fade found they had so much in common.
They had both been born in Rotwater, Oceanrun was curious about what was in the world, other dragons especially.
And they were both searching for something. Oceanrun was searching for his charge, and Fade...
Fade was looking for a friend.
The next morning, the two emerged from their resting place. They had decided to travel together, in search of both a charge and companionship. Fade looked at her strange new travelling companion.
And the two took off, flying toward their goal, their future.
To serpents’ tails, lurking horrors, strange new companions.
And the Skull Reef Colony.
Familiar: Scarlet is Fade's fidgety ruby webwing. She is often perched on, or flying around Fade. She has a habit of loudly squawking at random times, and enjoys eating rats of any kind. |
