Charoite
Firestarter
He wanders the island and sets it Ablaze
Arrived: 150x

"Things could have been Different"

It had to be a mistake. It had to be a mistake! Charoite reeled back away from the crackling vines reaching toward him. Heat radiated from the accursed vines, making him sweat even more than his fear already was.
Too soon, the young male found himself backed up against a tree with nowhere to run. A low groan escaped Char’s maw as the burning vines finally reached him, curling and twisting around his form. It was far too late for him to escape, and he sagged against the rough trunk of the tree. They bound him, tooth and claw to that spot for hours, daring him to move.

Finally, Charoite could bear it no longer, he willed his limbs to stretch and to accept the fate that was to become of him. With the first step, the vines began to screech and his, erupting into horrid blue flames. The forest around him crackled and fell to ash while he walked through; jaw clenched as his own skin turned black with soot and singed flesh.

Once free of the trees, Char spread his wings, shaking the still burning coals from his feathers and took to the air. It was too much to look back at the mess he had made, and he could only hope that whatever lived in that forest made it out alive.

The events leading up to Charoite’s curse are rather lonely, for he is such a dragon that prefers silence as opposed to the babeldom of clan crowds. He became a wanderer after leaving the nest, never having settled down in a proper home.

During a night of a dark moon, Char was passing through the Foxfire Bramble, an already dreary place to begin with. He had not passed a single other dragon on his travel through the shadow territories, his place of birth, though this did not bother him much.

Come the stroke of some far away midnight bell, a spiral dragon appeared. At first it seemed as if Char was simply passing another dark tangle of vines, but a moment later it moved. The wide eyed stranger quickly pounced on him, pulling him into a morbid semblance of a hug.

The spiral stranger insisted that Char stay a moment and play a game, one with quite high stakes. Just as he was about to refuse, he met the strangers eye. He felt himself nodding, fearing what might become of him if he were to say no.

“The rules are simple. The more you lose, the worse off you will be. The more you win…well you get to walk free.” Said the stranger as he pulled out a deck of cards.

Charoite looked on with disbelief. Anyone can play Higher or Lower and have pretty good odds…right?

At first using logic and basic number understanding was all he needed to win, and win he did. In streaks, he would keep on going. Each time he thought he would finally be done the spiral would reshuffle and tighten his coils. Gradually, Char saw that he was losing near every round.

Finally, with a cry of despair, Charoite watched as the stranger began to cackle. He had lost an entire deck. It was clear that the spiral didn’t intend to play any longer.

“Ta ta my friend. And do watch out for the brambles.”

He had flown for hours, and the black moon was soon to be upon him again. Turning into a meteor did not sound like an entirely appealing idea, as his wings would just give out as the fire took them again. He would have to find a place to land.

There, some distance below him, he spotted an island. Despite having looked at many maps before this journey, this place was unknown to him. He couldn’t spot any prominent nests so far up, and it did look certainly compelling…he felt something tugging at him to land, and so he did.

He lighted in a large lavender field, and feeling that such a beautiful place shouldn’t have to burn, he took to the cool forest that bordered it. He hoped that the fire would stop before it took too much of the island…it really was such a nice place.
