"What's your name..?" He studied the other guardian intently, hopefully not coming off as demanding. Through the thick bars that separated them, she glared back at him. Never in his life had he seen a stare so intense, yet so collected. Leon took note of her purple eyes.
Head tilting back at a faint dripping from the secluded cave his crewmates used as a prison, he gave a sniff. We're from the same element..
"Well?" Leon prompted. He sat down, taking his gaze to his sword. He started to sharpen it. He could wait all night for an answer.
His crewmates had apprehended her a few days ago for attempting to steal from their hoard. She hadn't gotten far, even though she possessed a strong magic.
The moment he met her, Leon knew that this dragon wasn't just a thief. She was so much more.
"What do you want?" a venomous whisper made him glance up. Leon's mouth twitched into a thin smile.
Even imprisoned, she sounded so confident.
Guess I might as well get down to business..
"Let's get one thing straight.." Leon placed his sword in its sheath before rising up. Tail swishing along the wet stones, he wrapped a foreclaw around one of the thick bars. The other reached into a pocket of his shabby pants.
Leon glanced behind him. Nothing greeted him but the lantern that marked the exit. He could just make out the beach and snippets of a deep night sky. Some of the butterflies in his stomach stilled.
Perfect.
Breath held, he turned back to her, "you're my charge."
"Well you're not mine," the dark scaled dragon yanked her tattered cloak closer to herself. Her glowing claws cast a faint light across the edges of her face as she studied the stalactites littering the ceiling.
A pause fell between them. He let out a sigh and fished the keys he'd picked off his captain out of his pocket.
"Listen," Leon lowered his voice as he held the ring up. They jingled faintly, "I'm letting you out of here." He began to fish for the correct one.
The other guardian pulled herself up from the ground in an instant, but the wariness in her eyes never left, "okay.."
"As repayment.." Leon took a deep breath as he stuck the key into the lock, "can I travel with you, wherever you go? It might be nice to watch each other's backs."
"Well I know you're going to follow me no matter what I say.." she grunted.
Leon pulled the door open, wincing at the obnoxious squeal it made, "uh..basically--But what's your name?"
"NightShade," she slipped past him, reaching her full height now--About as tall as him. She didn't bother to wait around for him, slipping off to the caves entrance in a heart beat.
"Leon," he hurried after her, trying not to think about the consequences of leaving his crew.
