Biography
C A B O C H O N S A G A C I O U S - M A G E ELDERLY CHILD OF THREE FLIGHTS |
There's a reason we don't remember our previous selves, our previous deaths, or our first moments after birth. That's the natural order; coded by some benevolent and wise deity for our own benefit. What happens if one of us violates that order? What happens if some hole opens in the reasoning of the universe, and we remember? It's a burden. It scars you, it stays with you. There are too many memories in your brain, too many thoughts to reach for. And far too much time. As Cabochon died for the first time, he expected himself to vanish, or to be whisked away into an afterlife, or to float around the globe, intangible, invisible, and inaudible. None of those things happened. There was a gap in his memory where there was only darkness and quiet-- and then there was too much sound and too much light as he burst through his eggshell into his next life. Confused and terrified, he flew from his hatch site on weak and wobbling wings, trying to escape the noise of this new world. Aiming for Dragonhome, his previous land, he instead got blown down to crash in the viridian labyrinth and be taken in by two friendly tundras. He had a feeling about these two as soon as he first saw them. Messages in his mind in the form of unsmellable scents told him things about other dragons-- or what they had been before. Every dragon he encountered had lived before as someone or something else, but they were all so blissfully unaware. Most times he could only see their last life, other times he caught a few whiffs of what came before that. With all these thoughts in his mind being contemplated ceaselessly every day, he was known as very quiet. It was often hard to get the words out of his mouth past the other thoughts and memories that swarmed his senses. Even with the memories of his previous self, he was much different now; instead of how he perviously explored and ran and learned, he now sat and stared and wondered. One day, though, he had to speak up. That was the day that his friend, Kai, was on his deathbed. Cabochon had been theorizing for a long while about the mobility of dragon souls. He felt that if he tried, he might just be able to save his friend by transferring him into a new body. The transfer was a success. Kai, now renamed L'Chaim, was younger and smaller now, with a foggy memory of his life as Kai, but he was very much alive. Every dragon in the clan became curious about the apparent reincarnation of souls, and one day, Smilax and Coleus, the clan leaders, came to Cabochon and asked him if he wanted to move to a more enlightening spot so that the clan could better understand all these discoveries. Cabochon, reluctantly and gratefully, lead the clan's migration to Dragonhome, the place of his youth and the place of his death. There they set down roots, planting seeds and trees from their homeland that they'd brought along the way. Cabochon dove once more into studying the runes of Dragonhome and venturing carefully into the Cairnstone rest. The rest of the clan aided him, and together they may find answers to all their questions. |
