Biography

EMILY

|| Precious Cinnamon Roll ||

|| "Would"not it be the perfect crime, if I stole your heart and you stole mine? ||

"What a beautiful child!" other dragons crooned to Emily, practically from the moment she was born. "What a precious thing she is!"

But Emily's parents only sniffed and turned away from her. This set the stage for Emily's lot in life: a lovely dragon, admired and cared for by those around her, except those whom she needed most: her own parents.

Emily's parents were scholars. They had enough problems to deal with, even without their hatchling disturbing them as they studied. And so for most of her childhood, Emily was left with babysitters and teachers. These dragons were all good souls; they fed her, cared for her, and educated her as she grew. They spoiled her somewhat, actually, for they were keenly aware of the disdain Emily's parents had for her, and they thought it unacceptable. And no matter how deeply other dragons cared for Emily, it was hard to miss the sadness in her eyes.

Emily studied hard. She hoped that by emulating her parents, she could at least win their respect, if not their affection. They seemed interested in geography and cultures, and so Emily studied those, too. She found many willing teachers, for she was a bright dragon, keen and quick to learn. Many dragons welcomed her into their classes, where she sat with other drakes from all walks of life: merchants, warriors, scientists, and craftsmen.

And at times, she met other dragons whose parents were much the same as hers: cold, uncaring, severe. Many of these youngsters were quiet and sad. A few were hostile, angry at everyone and everything. But they all shared the same pain; Emily recognized it in their eyes. She reached out to them, looking past the sadness and anger to the goodness that still burned beneath. She befriended many of these dragons and drew them out of their darkness. And they all loved her for it -- some even more than others.

It was not strange that Emily did not return their love, not romantically. She had a large heart and could not yet commit herself to just one dragon. And she wanted more out of life, too -- in the course of her studies, she had learned about other lands and now wanted to see them for herself. She would start out slowly, visit nearer lands first.

She had by then accepted that her parents would never show her affection. It was simply not in their nature. For all their faults, they had at least cared for her and seen to it that she had been educated. Emily bade them farewell, and away she went.

Her first journey was to the Viridian Labyrinth. She quickly fell in with a cheerful clan of dragons. They were wanderers, they told her, and didn't have a permanent place to stay, but Emily didn't mind. She wanted to see more of the world, and their wandering lifestyle suited her just fine.

She stayed with them as they traveled, and she was with them when they encountered the dragon known as Sonnae. Like many dragons in the clan, Emily shrank away from him at first. He was feral, as fierce as any of the beasts in the Labyrinth. Many dragons couldn't handle him, and he eventually came under the care of Gaellian and Halinka. Emily watched with wonder as the beast slowly transformed back into a civilized drake. Not by being beaten, not by being ignored, but by being cared for and treated with respect.

And so she, too, approached him and endeavored to speak with him -- just as she had done long ago for her classmates who'd been neglected by their own kin. She was pleasantly surprised when he answered gently. Even after everything he had been through, he still had a heart; Emily could see the kindness in his eyes. Her own heart softened towards him.

His name was Sonnae, and he stayed with the clan. Emily frequently found herself watching him training alongside Gaellian. Not everyone liked Sonnae; he could still be abrasive and brusque. But Emily noticed that no matter how bluntly he spoke, he was always helpful, and neither cruel nor mean-spirited. And he was unfailingly kind to her. Sonnae had been thrown aside by his parents, too. That shared pain drew them closer to each other, and it wasn't long before they were inseparable. The two of them had learned a great deal from each other: Even from the most wounded hearts, love could still grow. The beastliest dragons needed to be loved, not tamed, for them to become glorious princes and princesses once more.

The clan moved on, and Emily and Sonnae remained with them. They had found a new home together, and together they would stay.
