Sonata
Professor of Flight Culture - Choirmaster Sonata had grown up doing exactly as her parents had wanted. They were musicians of the highest caliber, and knew that their hatchlings would inherit that talent. Thus, each of them was required to train in the standard instruments - lute, lyre, and voice - in order to bring out and perfect this inborn ability. That was when the problems started. The first hatched of the siblings ran away barely hours after their first lesson. Her name was never again spoken, and Sonata was so young that its sound was soon forgotten. The second of the clutch, and their only brother, disappeared after they visited a traveling band of snappers, later learning that he had renamed himself "Broadscale" in an attempt to emulate them. His given name had been Rhapsody, and Sonata still sometimes dreamt of the beautiful music they had made together. She and her sister remained the last to carry on the great legacy of their family, and the pressure of perfection taunted them at every turn. Sonata sought comfort in the music of whispers that followed the Great Wind. "Shadows are never to be trusted," her mother cautioned her, "Tricks and deceit are their weapons. They will not care for your song." Sonata, of course, was not deterred. She was, in fact, even more intrigued that before. Had the whispers not sung to her? She knew that they had. And if she could care for their song, why could they not care for hers? She set off the next morning, with nothing but the stars and soft murmurs to guide her. She had just begun to think about getting home when the murmur was suddenly a whisper - a song - a symphony of lovely, beautiful music. The group was hesitant at first - a random light dragon appearing so close to something so sacred was so terrifying that she nearly lost them before she found them. But eventually a truce was constructed. Her music for theirs. A fair trade in seemly simple goods, but both parties knew the true value of what they offered. She spent a few months learning the ways of the Shadow songs...requiems, they called them. They were so different from the symphonies of Light that she was desperate to learn the ways of the other flights. She set off with only the stars and murmurs to guide her, but this time she felt...certain. She no longer needed the songs as comfort - they were her torch: a blazing light for her to carry into the unknown and illuminate what it was that she sought.
"You know that song that always gets stuck in your head? I heard a rumor...maybe more of a theory, perhaps, that it's your spirit song. Like spirit animal, but a bit less tangible, hm? I know it sounds crazy - but just imagine..."
