Chapter 1

Azlem was their post and newspaper girl. She'd been with the clan since the very beginning, back when she was a wee hatchling. Most days she was fluttering around the perimeter of their territory, wherever it was at the time, welcoming the numerous visitors who came across dangerous Lightning territory and guiding them to empty tents where they can stay.

She played chess with her mother, Chio, went exploring with Vin, and chatted with Boeitha. She was the sunshine of the clan.

But all suns must set into the darkness from which they were born.

We could say that she’d been fated to return to that cursed womb from which she came. Cursed to step into the world found only on the surface of water, unsure whether she or her reflection was the illusion. But how can we speculate about destiny, when it has already come . . . and gone.

It was years before Azlem returned.

Chapter 2

The second chapter of her life has never been recorded. If it was, it lies in another book, scattered among the ruins of the night city.

A title lettered in dramatic font, black and gold. Ink splots next to words of emphasis, mixed with rouge. Long, tense paragraphs, covering the pages with painful emotion.

A tale of loss. Of growth and death. Because nothing can grow without killing an older part of itself.

Chapter 3

She returned without warning.

The clan realised that she'd become someone whose return needed to be forewarned.

Her face was changed. Her tongue unnatural. She blended in a little too well with a dark forest. Her chess plays guarded, her dialogue evasive. Even her mother, who could read her fae gestures, struggled to pair this dragon with that of the girl who'd left.

She took up her old role. Directing travellers to a home they could stay in. Sometimes, on sunny days, she flits from tent to tent with the same bubbly energy. Then, the clan breathes a sigh of relief, reassured that they haven’t lost all of Azlem yet.
