OPALESCENT
the golden glow hides the tainted heart
"Stronger. I must become stronger."
It was what the Mirror was known for- it was all she knew. Strength was what mattered out in the real world. Her bright colors made her a poor predator, unable to surprise anything when living crystal reflected all light. She was lined with living beams of the stuff, a soft yellow glow that permeated her very being. Out roaming among the nomadic prides of her kind, she could not afford to go hungry so often as she was. A whisper reached her. A voice telling of a source of strength far greater than she could muster alone. It whispered from the deepest places of Sornieth. It spoke of a power older than time, of such great energy that none could stand before her should she use it. If she took this gift, she would never miss prey again. She would never be left on the outskirts of her pack. She would never be the one hiding because she failed to bring back an offering for the communal food that night. And she was awfully hungry. They never noticed the change- only that she was better at bringing them meals now. They failed to see the ichor around her eyes, the discoloration around where she struck the killing blow. No one knew until she turned against them, hunting each of her packmates down until she alone stood in the carnage. She stood there, coated in crimson and black, until she was approached by a small Fae.
"Do you wish to be saved?"
What arrogance- to believe she needed saving! The Mirror was about to strike when the Fae alit upon the corpse of one of her brethren. Drawn by the motion, the Mirror followed. The Fae moved again, trailing long tail behind as a lure to the Mirror's mind. Each motion was accompanied by muttered words until the Mirror was so drawn in she failed to see the magic about her. Light bloomed from the stars above, casting the grisly scene in stark contrast- and Opal knew the pain she had born. In that moment, she turned to the Fae.
"Please."
And so she was brought into the clan, brought under observation by the Arcanist's own. Under the watchful eye of the clan's greatest fighters, she seeks salvation at the claws of their devout progenitor. |
