She woke to the feeling of cool water on her flank, and when she opened her eyes, brilliant light blinded her.

More out of instinct than anything else, she thrashed, looking wildly for a way out of the water. That was when she felt hands on her wings and heard words in a tongue she didn't understand, and lashed her long neck about to look at her attackers.

As it turned out, the Maren Warlocks did not intend her harm; in fact, they wanted nothing more than to help the creature they had found collapsed in the crystalline eddies near their home.

The days went by slowly as Armona itched to pace the rocky outcrop reserved for her, but some part of her knew better. So she laid on her stomach, allowing creatures she felt in her gut were enemies to dab at the injuries that cut into her scales. They seemed to take an achingly long time to heal, but that gave her opportunity to learn some of the language of the Maren. She learned from the two healers who attended her every evening that she had been very nearly slain by a Hawksbill Goliath. They had found her with the spines on the crown of her head crushed and blood seeping from her jaw and snout.

That would explain why I have no recollection of where I came from or who I am, Armona thought mournfully. She had the vague sense that she had once had a family or children, but could not recall their faces. The Maren told her that she was a Plague dragon, and explained what they could of the flight and its customs--it seemed right to the ridgeback, but she didn't remember anything of the Scarred Wasteland they described, nor of the foods and creatures that dwelt there.

When it was finally time for Armona to leave the Maren she had come to consider tentatively as friends, she bowed her head and faced the rising sun. Where should she go, when the concept of home was nothing but a fleeting sense of absence in the back of her mind?
