"were you not," the little hatchling whispers, "the crown prince
of another great witching nation, once, that one which destiny
commanded would be the greatest of all?"
"yes," he says, throat scratchy, heart quiet, "and more."
"were you not," the little hatchling continues, "supposed to be
the great one who finally brought thaw to the icewarden's
domain?"
at that he manages to laugh. "no, no," he whispers, "i do not
think that the icewarden would have stood for that. but i have
heard the rumors."
the hatchling blinks to process it all.
"then why are you here, now?"
he looks into the distance, and feels his eyes growing weak
again.
"because the icewarden is rarely pleased with his creations,"
he finally replies, quiet and calm. there is an edge of bitterness
to his voice, but nothing beyond that.
the hatchling watches him, confused by his rhetoric and lack
of willingness to expose the full truth. she turns and leaves,
remembering her mother's warnings to stay far away from the
wildclaw whose skin is stained with poison and failure.
"i was not enough," he whispers quietly after her. "even then,"
he continues, "i failed. i was not enough for the icewarden to
want me to remain on this earth. our icewarden is fickle and
unstable."
time was that cygnus had promised to remain at his side
through all of it, and yet now tianyi had exiled her, claimed she
was a traitor. was she really? 20426344
