Biography

Unnamed
Demigirl
Storm Painter
tumblr_inline_nll47yvyXg1qg2i5p_400.png The old Ridgeback settled onto the huge cushion with a tired groan. She was an old one, and had seen the rise, fall and rise again of the Flights across the world. Her nose was bent a bit and her dagger spikes were worn down and dull from the wind, sand, and age. Her grin was still crafty though, full of sharp teeth and the Stormcatcher's own confidence. Incense burned around her, trailing little wisps of smoke into the still air. Her name was Heleah, and she was the grand story teller of the clan. That mostly meant she told stories to the hatchlings.

The clan's hatchlings sat in a huddle before her. Bright, [your flight's eye color] eyes looking up at her in wonder. She was an old one and while her eyes were the color of the storm, she'd been so long in the Plateau before coming here she might as well have been a Wind dragon. "O-ma," one of the little bundled spirals said, their voice high and jittery. The spirals were vibrating in their skins, wanting to move and fly about but staying still because they knew the Ridgeback loathed it. Waste of energy. She didn't tolerate squirmy hatchlings. "Will you tell us a story from the Shifting Expanse?"

Heleah looked down at the hatchlings, so small and attentive. She smiled a smile only a Lightning dragon could smile. "The Expanse?" she asked and they all nodded vigorously. "Yes, I think I have a story from the Expanse," she said. At once they all took flight and landed amid her dulled spines and along her head and neck and shoulders. The larger ones crowded around her feet or climbed onto her mighty elbow. "Have I ever told you the stories of the Storm Painters of the Shifting Expanse?" she asked.

"No O-ma Heleah," one little skydancer whelp said who was on the joint of her wing.

"Ah. Then you are in for a treat my darlings. You see, the Storm Painters are part of the Stormcatcher's Exalted. They are above, and mighty and fierce. Only Ridgebacks may be chosen as Storm Painters for only they can fathom the storm, only they can commune with the violent forces. The Stormcatcher bestows to them the power to draw from his power and make fantastic displays in the sky like Ashfall fireworks, only more precise, more dramatic.

"This Storm Painters are the artisans of the Expanse. There are no painters or artists in the Expanse, its seen as frivolous and a waste of time when one could be building, or working. The Storm Painters are the one exception among the Stormcatcher's Exalted.

"During the darkest of days, when the clouds cover the sun and there are no storms so even the Lightning Farm is calm, casting the desert into twilight will they appear. They come from the Tempest Spire, they and the lightning a single thing, a perfect bond. Their scales are laced with Lightning, seeping between the cracks of their scales in a vivid display of color and power. They fly up into the clouds," Heleah raised her claw up into the air. The hatchlings were hanging off every word. "Once there their cloud colors help them blend into the clouds. All that can be seen of a Storm Painter at first is their brilliant markings.

"And then there is a single spark and like a storm has come lightning spikes all across the Expanse. They provide a show for the entire desert."

"Really O-ma?" one of the hatchlings asked.

"Yes," she said and patted their head gently. "They shoot magic from every spine and every claw, weaving elaborate lightning lines into shapes and pictures. They crackle in yellows, blues, and reds so bright it is as though the sun was out. The show is for the entire Expanse, from the Spire to the Highland Scrub. And it is on these days that even the most hard working Lightning dragons put down their tools and marvel at the artists of the Stormcatcher. For this single day, no Lightning dragon work, and the roaring machines are reduced to a hum.

"The Painters leave with the next storm. The elemental lightning disrupting their pictures and striking it apart. The Storm Painters retreat back to the Tempest Spire to plan their next display, the next time there is a clear day and they can put on their next great show."

The hatchlings were silent still, wondering if the story was over. On cue [a dragon of your choice] came into the room, announcing it was time to eat. The hatchlings took off and scrambled out of the room, eager for food. All except one.

"Is that true, O-ma?" a little ridgeback asked. She was a new thing to the clan, without the [flight eye color] [flight] eyes of her peers. Rather she was a Lightning ridgeback. She was a little grey thing who'd gotten too close to her mother's alchemic pot and her scales were stained with poison.

"Of the Storm Painters?" Heleah asked.

Heleah smiled fondly at the hatchling. "Yes," she said.

"Can I become a Storm Painter even if I don't become Exalted?" they asked.

"Well if you do it will certainly be something to add to my story, wouldn't it?" Heleah asked and the little ridgeback nodded quickly. She shooed the ridgeback away, to go eat and got comfortable again. Someone would come bring her some shrimp for her meal. When you were as old as she you didn't have to go and get your own food anymore. "Heh, non Exalted Storm Painters indeed," she mused to herself as her scales began to glow along the scale lines. She let them flare up a moment before dimming again and smiled to herself contently.
