It has been said that hatchlings often do not see atrocities as they are. How can they, if they had been raised to think of these occurrences as "normal"? How can they, if there are none to teach them the difference between right and wrong, between justice and corruption?

Once, in a land far away, a child had been born. Raised among corpses and disease, he too had believed in everything uttered by superiors, taken lies as truth. No, it was not as if he were born evil, far from it. The drake had an uncanny sense of intelligence from the very start. They had groomed the bright, curious hatchling into the cold, calculated dragon he was later known to be. Strychnos was the descendant of a long line of quick witted scientists. Creators of silent assassins, weapons of cowards, brews that could fell an imperial with a mere drop. Or, as you could also call them, poisonmakers.

Of course, young Strychnos behaved in the manner in which he was raised to. Obedient, following orders without a second thought. Expressionless, ceasing to convey the slightest hint of emotion, if he were ever to be interrogated. Only curiosity could sway the rigid manner to which he clung by the rules. Curious, of why none of his kin seemed to stay in the craft for long. Curious, of why the concoctions stung his clawtips, of the strange tingling feeling the valves and beakers held. But he shook them off. His parents, his mentors - they wanted the best for him, didn't they?

When the truth was uncovered, Strychnos was shocked to the core.

His beloved mentor, the one who worked himself to the bone, who would never call it quits. He had stayed in the profession for far too long, they said. And so he wilted, wasted away, reduced into nothing more but an animated corpse. His apprentice looked on in horror as the skin burned from his elegant fingers, peeling back until stark white bone peeked from underneath. As his bright eyes dimmed, glassing over, dull, unseeing stones. All this could already be bad enough, enough to scar his young mind. But Strychnos realized that he had uncovered the tip of an iceberg.

If this could happen to an experienced master, someone who handled the poisons with care and made efforts to make the least amount of contact possible... what would happen to the dragons the brews were meant for? And Strychnos was afraid. Terrified, really. For he knew the same thing would happen to him if he continued this line of work. The poison would harm many, waste the bodies away until they were nothing, and eventually, the same would happen to him. Surely, there were already some that had suffered at his claws. Held fates far worse than even his old mentor’s, and that in itself was enough to convince the youth to leave his homeland forever. Oh, and the curious coincidence of a bounty on his head certainly did not help encourage him to stay in the Plaguebringer’s domain.

No, he was not sure where he would go. Only... only some place to escape the wretched guilt. And Strychnos had grown sick of the scent of decay seasons ago. So him, guided by a whiff of fresh air, found himself in the middle of the Viridian Labyrinth. He met a motherly Tundra, captivated by the utter essence of life that clung to her. Yavanna sensed his troubles, and, not knowing what else to do, Strychnos confessed. Turning around, the Tundra whipped out a paw, breaking the thin web to which a spider clung. Just as suddenly, she caught it and placed the arachnid onto the nearby branch.

“You can think, and you can try, but you will never be able to change what happened in the past. Instead, my child, open your eyes, turn to the future, prevent tragedies from happening again.”

And so that is how Strychnos has become the dragon he is today, a crafter of antidotes in Yavanna’s clan. The matriarch was his guide, the light at the end of a long, dark tunnel, the one who led the way to his future. He can kill, he can destroy. But now, Strychnos has learned the way of healing, the skills he had sharpened in the dark days of the past now aiding him to heal in the bright of the present, the future.
