DUTIES
One might expect a merchant to hold the title of “Artifact Acquirer” over a battlemage, but no one can argue that Mouse is effective at his job. Tasked with bartering for the borrowing and use of various artifacts, tomes, and other magical objects, Mouse mainly employs sweet-tongued diplomacy in order to obtain what his people need, but when he is refused he has learned to obtain the item in question by any means necessary.

PERSONALITY
Described as a happy, even chipper man, Mouse is the epitome of positivity and friendliness, appearing at first to border on naivety as he approaches any and all in his path. For every smile, however, is a quick calculation; Mouse may want to believe the best of everyone he meets, but he has experienced the world for what it really is and knows better. Nevertheless, he is always one to give others second chances- though never a third- and yet never expects the same in return; even after the strange eruption of magic that had changed him so vastly, failure has never been an option for the young battlemage, resulting in a quick mind capable of careful planning and nearly self-destructive spontaneity.

BEFORE
They called him a mouse back at the academy, where it all began. One day Aethereus would call him Mouse, too, but it would because he told them that was his name, a lie spread in a fit of self-loathing and then because he hoped that having control of the name would give him power.

But back then- back when he was no one but some common child of the slums- the name had been a curse, a slur they spat at him for his common blood and ill-fortunes. He was shy and quiet and desperate to learn and they sensed his desire and laughed. It didn't matter that he'd made it into the academy because he had potential or that his blood ran pure with magic. To them he was just a peasant scum, elevated from poverty to the world of the rich and powerful through sheer luck.

And then the worst happen, and everyone found out.

To say his experience there was a miserable one is an understatement.

No one was surprised to find him gone one morning. "Like a mouse stealing scraps," they laughed, even his instructors, even the man who had been the one to offer him a place in the school but had instead taken everything from him.

The Founders of the Waymire Coven took him in. They were kinder than the academy, strict but gentle in comparison, teaching him through methods he could both understand and deliver upon, maybe even enjoy. But he was still so desperate to prove himself. He needed to show them that he could be more for them. He struggled and fought against the uncertainty and the despair and did everything he could to be better for them. He pushed himself to his limitations- not so far to pay the price, no, he was too frightened of that- but he made sure, made certain, that he could be everything they desired of him.

And then he died.

He never really did get the full story. All that he remembered was the fear, the twisting and thrashing of the world as it collapsed all around him. He remembered screaming desperately for help, his voice swallowed up by the silence, and when he finally opened his tightly shut eyes he was somewhere else and everything had changed.

He was changed.

When he woke, he found himself in the care of a Guardian named Kakya- the queen of Aethereus, he was later told, and how he shook with both fear and admiration at the thought- who revealed to him that he’d been found in the middle of their city, tossed into the street by some unknown anomaly. He’d been gravely wounded, but his mind had seen the most damage, irreparably changed by whatever magic had tossed him so far from the Coven’s lands. He’d been brought to their finest healers, and once they’d been assured that he would recover he had been left in the care of the queen herself, who wished to learn more of her sudden guest and what exactly had brought him to her doorstep.
Though he had no answers to give her she was still kind to him, and when he wrote to the Coven and received no answer in reply she went one step further and accepted him into her city.

He quickly discovered that whatever magic had whisked him from the Coven had changed him in many ways. It had taken away his fear and uncertainty and left behind an almost angry sort of courage. No longer desperate to prove himself, he simply was. He was everything the academy had tried to make him, he was everything the Founders had ever hoped to teach him. He was powerful and confident, able to summon up magic without a second thought. The well of energy within him seemed boundless, unlimited, and for the first time in his life he felt something he'd never felt before as he summoned endless coils of fire and lightning: happiness.

He proved himself in his new self-confidence as a fully capable diplomat, liar, and thief; though the first was always the preferred option, Mouse became acquainted in all three very quickly when the Queen began to send him to various lands in search of artifacts, knowledge, and magic. Blinded by admiration, he never allowed himself to question the reason why he was being sent out for such items, having the utmost confidence in his leaders and their goals, or why he was required to steal what was not freely given. He made it a habit to return what could not be used at the very least, though he knew his Queen would never forgive him if he was caught.

It was during one such mission of returning what had been “borrowed” when he discovered a final change wrought by the anomaly: injured during his infiltration, he realized that his blood no longer ran red but golden, the color of a warm sunset on the horizon, and even as he stared and the blood slipped away he saw the small wound fade, healed of its own volition.

He didn’t know what it meant, but something- something small and scared and familiar- warned him never to tell anyone, not even the Queen.

The secret proved a burden, but it was one he was willing to carry if it meant keeping the life he’d finally claimed for his own.

NOW
Mouse served loyally until the end. When the motivations of the royal house were revealed he wanted nothing more than to deny that truth, even going so far as to try and protect them from the One From the Stars. Something- perhaps the stranger himself- had prevented him from reaching them in time before the curse overwhelmed the land.

In the following years he has come to term with the truth and his own sins, turning his attention instead to helping protect the people and undo the curse that had taken them. One of the few not to experience distortions in time and space, he has nevertheless been cursed with a new ability; able to jump between the planes of existence, he can travel great distances in short time. In the beginning the ability was vastly out of his control, though even now he still regularly wakes in places far from home.
