Chapter 29: Spirits in the Draconic World

Clan Adeptica had gotten to be large enough that many of its members kept to their own schedules and kept the company of their own choosing. They no longer all ate dinner together en masse, which was how it was that Jareth heard about the arrival of Luke and Nomi through Talia later that evening. She told him the highlights of what Luke had told the clan about the Force and Force-Sensitives, which Jareth found fascinating. He met the newcomers the next day, when he and Nomi happened to pass by each other on their way to breakfast.

The little Imperial hatchling shrieked. "A Sith!" She did her best to hide behind her Wildclaw master.

Jareth turned around and advanced toward the pair of him, fangs bared. "What did you just call me?" he growled.

"Nomi!" Luke reprimanded her. "That was very rude. If you'd reached out with your feelings like I've been teaching you, or even if you'd taken a closer look at him, you would have seen that he's a Wind dragon. There's nothing to be afraid of."

"Yeah, that's right," said Jareth. "What's that got to do with it? And what is a Sith, anyway?"

"A member of a sub-organization of Force-Sensitives who believe in using their abilities only to gain power for themselves," Luke explained. "In the same way that Jedi are always all-white with a colored circuit pattern, Sith are always all-black with a colored circuit pattern. But they also keep their numbers very limited, and they won't let anyone in who wasn't hatched in either Plague or Light. Nomi was afraid of you because she saw your pattern, and she jumped to conclusions without finding out who you really were, which wasn't very wise."

"I'm sorry," Nomi said, hanging her head. "You're not a bad guy."

Jareth's snarl faded, and he lowered his wings. "Tell me more about these Force-Sensitives," he said to Luke.

"Certainly," said Luke. "I was going to talk to you about this later, but now that Nomi has broached the topic: Have you ever noticed that you can do more things with your magic than other dragons can?"

"What kinds of things?" said Jareth. "I have always had the touch for magic - it's easy for me to use."

"Things like being telekinetic, or influencing the thoughts of those around you?"

"I always thought telekinesis was an Arcane thing, so I never tried. You can do pretty much the same thing with Wind magic a lot of the time, though, and I can do that pretty well. I am known for being charismatic, but I don't know that my magic has ever affected anyone that way."

"Well, it’s quite possible you might have been doing it subconsciously, without knowing it. Would you mind if I read you, to see if you do have the potential I think you do?"

"Sure, go ahead."

Luke closed his eyes and slowly raised one paw toward Jareth. There were a few moments of silence as he concentrated. Then, he opened his eyes in surprise.

"Definitely," he said. "You do have Force sensitivity, and if you would like me to help you learn to focus and harness it, I would be more than happy to. But there's something else, too - something completely different, that I've been searching for, myself."

"Oh? What is that?"

"I'll tell you tonight. I'm inviting a few of us to get together at the edge of the lake, just before sunset. Can you be there?"

"Yes. I will. Thank you - Luke, right? I’m Jareth, by the way. Talia's mate."

"Pleased to meet you, Jareth," said Luke.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

There was a small fire glowing on the shore of the lake when Jareth arrived there that night. Luke and Nomi were there, as well as Leota, Rarity, and Spike.

"This is an interesting mix of dragons," said Jareth. "What is all this about?"

"Have a seat, and I'll explain," said Luke. Jareth did.

"The reason I've called you all here tonight," Luke began, "is a hypothesis of mine that I'd like to share with you. It sounds crazy, but please hear me out. If I'm wrong, we can all just disregard this conversation and carry on with our lives.

"I believe that there are other entities or beings in other parts of the cosmos - maybe other dimensions or something. And that some of us have a connection to one of those entities. I have one. Nomi has one. And based on the energies I've sensed from all of you, I believe you may have those connections, too."

"I thought that was what this meeting might be about, when I saw who was here," Leota said. "I do have one of those connections you speak of. I've been having visions of the being I'm connected to - my kindred spirit - ever since I came of age. I never thought I would meet anyone else who had encountered this phenomenon, but then Rarity and Spike came to me and told me they’d had a similar vision."

"That's right," said Rarity. "We asked Leota about it because we thought she might understand, and she did. So there are more of us! Wow."

"I brought my orb with me," said Leota, "in case my suspicion about what this meeting was for was correct."

Leota opened a bag she had brought with her and removed the glass orb she had shown Rarity and Spike once before, the one with the model of a tree inside. She repeated the story she had told them about how she had come by it, and how it worked. Then she invited Luke and Nomi to try it out.

As soon as Luke's and Nomi's paws touched the orb, bright blue and purple lights appeared on its inside surface. The lights shot into the trunk of the crystal tree, then traveled up it together, finally settling into the same leaf.

"Amazing," said Leota. "You both have kindred spirits, and they even hail from the same world. Much like mine and Thurl's, although his connection to his isn't as strong as mine. Could you try it separately?"

They did, and they found that they could each make their own light appear independently of each other. "Your affinity is strong," said Leota. "Jareth, would you like to try?"

Jareth came forward and placed his paw on the orb. His light flared to life - a strong, white glow that shot into another leaf of the tree.

"So, not only do I have one of these kindred spirits, but I also have the potential for sensitivity to the Force," said Jareth. "I don’t know why I'm so special."

"Me neither," said Leota.

"I understand it's a lot to take in," said Luke. "Take as much time as you need, and come to me if you ever want to learn more about what you can do with that potential. There's no hurry - anytime you're ready."

"So much for the secret club, I guess," said Spike.

"Well, now we know that this kindred-spirit phenomenon is much more widespread than I thought," said Leota. "The whole clan is going to find out sooner or later."

"Would anyone else believe us if we told them about this?" said Nomi.

"Baystrider," said Rarity. "He's our resident neutral mediator, and he's really good with our Skydancer energy-sensing ability. He'll know we're telling the truth, and everyone will believe him."

"Sounds like a plan," said Luke. "We'll talk to him in the morning." He sighed. "I'm so glad there's a group of us here. That way, we can all support each other."

"Maybe that could become part of Clan Adeptica's mission, too," said Leota. "Welcoming dragons who have these connections to these kindred spirits, and giving them the support they need to thrive. My mate and I joined just after the clan's charter was written, but it isn't written in stone. Literally or figuratively."

"I think that's a great idea," said Rarity. "I hope Adeptica and Devon go for it."

"I would imagine they will," said Jareth. "I’m back on good terms with them now, and if Baystrider and I both agree that this is a real thing that's really happening, I'm sure they'll listen to us."

"We really were meant to come to this clan," said Nomi.

"Yes," said Luke. "I'm even more sure of that now than I was before."
