Polaroid

Quite and calm, Polaroid walked through the cave and out into the darkness of the night. The night was cold, but she didn’t mind. She looked up to the sky to see the hundreds of stars above her. She did this every night when all of the dragons were sleeping. She loved watching the stars shine bright, but that wasn’t the only reason she wandered off at night. She hoped that one day she would see a familiar face in the sky, maybe her father or mother, or maybe even her sister, but every night all she could see were the stars.

It wasn’t that she hated this clan, she actually loved them, but she loved her family more. She had gotten lost and never found her way home and settled here with the clan. She was good with magic and helped Taw with his potions, and one day she asked if he could help her find her family, but he couldn’t, he wasn’t the expert on the stars; that was Atria and Carpus.

Atria and Carpus were experts on almost everything because they read Undyne’s books every day, asking each other thought provoking questions and hiding from everyone else until it was time to eat. Polaroid had thought about asking them for help, but she didn’t, she thought that it would just be easier to stay here and help this clan thrive. She liked all of the dragons here, especially Undyne. She and Undyne would talk for hours about the stars and the sun and just talk about the world. She was fairly happy with the setup she had here.

“It’s a little late to be out here all by yourself.” Taw said from inside the cave, scaring Polaroid. She didn’t respond but instead looked back up to the stars and let out a sigh. “You know, I used to wish my family would come and pick me up from this clan, but the reality is that they’re never going to come back, and that’s okay because these dragons are kind and protect each other, Pole, they- no, we’ll protect you here.” Taw tried comforting her, it worked a bit.

“I know, but it’s just so frustrating not knowing what happened to my family.” Polaroid said.

“Look, don’t worry about that family, worry about your new family.” Taw said, walking over to Polaroid and giving her a hug. Polaroid melted into the hug with a smile, “Come on Pole,” Taw said leading Polaroid back into the cave, “Let’s get some sleep for tomorrow.”

Before retreating into the cave, Polaroid looked up at the sky once more to see nothing but the stars shining bright against the dark sky. She cracked a small smile and followed Taw back inside.
