Beryl had a pitiful childhood. His father and mother were two dragons of different clans, that met by chance and fallen in love when the two had become lost together. They had Beryl, but within the first few weeks of his birth his father and mother managed to find a route back to their homes. His father of course couldn’t care for a newborn hatchling properly, and his mother simply couldn’t imagine having to to confess to her clan she had beared a child with a different clan member… so she brought him back home with her, and shamefully lied to her clanmates that she had found the young guardian hatchling abandoned.

Due to this, Beryl was alone for much of his childhood. Dragons in the clan tried their best to care
for him, especially Mavis, although as discretely as she was able, but no dragon was able to permanently bring him into their nest as their own, some mother dragons in the clan even cursing he had ever even been brought in at all. As a result he developed a cold and cynical view of others. He considered the world to be an uncaring place, and left his clan to pursue the parents that left him all alone and fending for himself in the world.
