There were remnants of a much older lair on the outskirts of the clan's last home, where the leaders considered expanding into, but lack of funds and time prevented it from being realized. The dragons whose nests lie close to the boundaries would sometimes feel a presence watching them, but were unable to find any evidence of other dragons nearby. Some were uncomfortable and moved their nests as soon as they were able, others found no issues as long as they are unharmed and accept the otherworldly presence. A few of the more adventurous hatchlings would often sneak into the ruins, guided away from the unsafe areas by an unseen force.

Adeline could not remember the fate of her original clan, nor could she remember what caused her to be trapped and unable to pass on. All she knew is that she had been in the ruins for longer than she can remember, and that no matter how many times she tried, she couldn't leave. Very few people in the clan were able to communicate with her, and she feared scaring most of them away. The one person who could hear her-Iridium-had left to serve the Stormcatcher long ago, leaving Adeline alone. The arrival of Naomi and Beyond in the clan gave Adeline new hope that someone would be able to free her, or at least speak to her.

Adeline was very friendly and loud in life, but is more quiet and subdued as a spirit. She enjoyed working with textiles and reading stories, both by herself and to anyone who would listen. One of her favorite pastimes was to play with and care for the multitude of hatchlings who passed through and were born into her clan-she has retained her protective streak toward them in death. The recent hatchlings of the clan possess a strong protective urge of her in return, if only in their subconscious; many of the youths have taken to sabotaging Phillip's experiments, knowing that not only could he bring something in that he was unable to control, but that he runs a very real chance of hurting Adeline.

Upon learning of the clan's imminent journey to the Tangled Wood, Beyond and Naomi enlisted the help of Ammanita and some out of clan necromancers to bind Adeline to a constructed body and return her to the living. She now exists unbound to the site of her death and managed to travel with the clan to their current home. The necromantic amulet she wears binds her to a state somewhere between life and death; Adeline doesn't really care, as she's too happy about having a body once more to care about semantics. Though she is saddened by the deaths of her friends, she keeps strong, and is now a respected and loved member of the clan despite her undeath.

Though she smells like empty places and never seems to eat, Adeline is still beloved by the hatchlings she has taken as her Charge. By the book Safiya is still the head caretaker, but in truth she and Adeline are more like partners-they are quite close and have spent many a night together. The children delight in her company, as she follows them wherever their adventures might take them and never raises a chastising word. Still, though, they know she will protect them with all her might, and thus they can explore freely, knowing safety lies just under her musty wing. A few of the clan's older members suspect the reason the horrors have yet to try to corrupt any hatchlings born in Condor's Hollow is because of Adeline's ominous shadow at their sides. Not quite dead, but not quite alive, she occupies the same spaces as they, and would fight with all the ferocity expected of her should anyone lay a hand on her Charges.
