The pursuit of knowledge is more valuable than its possession.

When Viridian hatched, she silently took in her surroundings, and these precious few seconds were probably the only moment in her life, when the gears in her brain got any rest. Because Viridian didn’t come to this world kicking or screaming. She came calm, collected, and seeking answers. At first, her questions were quite simple. For how long was she in an egg? Why did her parents decide to lay the said egg? And where do eggs come from?

However, as she grew older, the others couldn’t help her find the knowledge she sought. She wasn’t exactly interested in history of the dragonkind and their deities, she wanted to know why. Why was there magic? Why life? What meaning did their world hold, what purpose did it have? Viridian immersed herself in scrolls written by famous philosophers, pondering the nature of life. But as her mountain of precious relics and manuscripts rose, Viridian began to lose touch with the very thing she wanted to research. The only dragons she occasionally met were antiquarians and traveling merchants (and that one fisherman who was kind enough to deliver food right to her study).

Until one day, a very charismatic skydancer knocked on her door. Her reputation as a brilliant philosopher and a connoisseur of the especially difficult writings preceded her, he said. Her wings glistened in the most beautiful way, he continued. And he happened to have a very rare piece of writing, one that he only offered to those who were sure to appreciate it, he concluded. Viridian didn’t care much for the praise or the skydancer’s dashing appearance (truth to be told, she didn’t even glance at him). But the sealed scroll he showed her looked more than promising. The fabric on the case, the details on the wax seal, everything pointed to a long-lost relic Viridian hoped to acquire one day.

When the skydancer (who called himself Icy, or Snowy, or some other name Viridian didn’t care to remember) left, carrying a massive sack of treasure, she sat down in her study. Carefully, as if she was handling a freshly hatched baby bird, Viridian peeled off the seal on the case and gently took out the scroll. And began to read.

”After you marinate the shellbugs for no less than two days, you can begin working on your crust. Be sure to keep the shellbugs in a cold space, otherwise your stuffing might…”

At that very moment, Viridian realized that nobody could like a shellbug pie enough to seal the instructions for baking it in a century-old case. She had been scammed. And she wasn’t about to let it go. Leaving the safety of her home seemed hard at first, but Viridian’s hunger to confront the merchant was insatiable. He mocked the sanctity of her field of study, and she doubted his compliments were sincere anyway! However, as she searched for him, she began to realize, that her scientific approach to finding out the meaning of life has been rather flawed. You see, it appears that one has to properly start living it to uncover its nature.
_______

Ici was enjoying a nice afternoon nap on one of the platforms in the Cloudsong. Wind rustling through his feathers, a bag of treasure as a pillow, things couldn’t have been better. Until a heavy scroll case hit him right in the face. “You spelled ‘condiment’ wrong, moron,” said a calm, but very, very cold voice. Ici scrambled to stand up, only to find himself facing a familiar face. Her wings shone even brighter now, and a small part of him was impressed. A big part of him, actually, she managed to track him down pretty fast. “If it isn’t my favorite customer! I knew the head on your shoulder was bound to be smarter than mine. How about a business proposition, my viciously clever friend?”

And, to his big surprise, Veridian agreed.
