He blames himself for the deaths, so he turns his back on his brothers.
Shuns their creed and their foolish old ways set in stone. He refuses to follow their Creed for his own reasons. He does it out of guilt, out of remorse.
And when he joins the Creed's enemies, he does it only for redemption.

No one knows who Cormac really is. Rumour has it that he retired from his assassin life after regretting the death of an innocent. Some claim that his assassin guild had thrown him out after an accident that he'd caused killed many. The truth is closest to the first rumour, except for one small detail--well, maybe a hundred thousand more details. He hadn't just caused the death of one innocent. He'd caused the deaths of, well, nearly a hundred thousand people.
All this for a piece of Eden.
The earthquake triggered by the Temple of Eden killed many, and Cormac barely escaped with his life. Grief at the loss prompted him to question the motives of his own guild. That mission was assigned to him by that guild who believed that they themselves held the responsibility to keep the peace and freedom. Disbelieving and betrayed, Cormac stole the only clue they possessed to another piece of Eden and left, unable to bear with the death that weighed on his shoulders.
Years spent trying to find redemption with the Creed's enemies left him tired and weary.
So he retired to a small, unassuming clan in the Plaguelands, convincing the clan's leaders to take him in. He does not mess with the affairs of the Templars or the Assassins like he used to. Their struggle is one he will not have a bigger part of. In his younger days, perhaps. Not anymore now. Cormac keeps to himself now, leaving the clan frequently on missions he claims are 'for the greater good'. If he must meddle in the affairs of this silent war, he will do it on his own terms.
He is a formidable fighter, though he prefers to keep to the shadows. Only Tisiphone (and maybe Thrasos) know of his skill. In addition to his admirable fighting skills (you'll want him on your side in a bar fight) Cormac just so happens to be extraordinarily good at sailing. No one questions his abilities, and he demonstrates them only when necessary. He has no wish to draw attention to himself; in everyone's eyes he is only a mere trader (he does sell animal pelts) and a good hunter.
It is a quiet life he lives nowadays. His closest friends are two other pearlcatchers: Nixbinarii and Helios. These two dragons, a dracodroid and a mysterious Light representative are the two who can truly claim to know him. And even then, all they know is the tip of the iceberg. He's also got a rather peculiar bond with his graveyard guardian familiar. Calls it "Lisbon" for some reason. This dragon really doesn't want to forget.
Peace isn't easy to find.
But damn it all, he will try.

He is of the Assassin bloodline.
