Iolite The Messenger |
Though you spend some time browsing the writings of Midnight, you eventually duck out of the structure and move on to the next platform, which is floating fairly close to Midnight’s. This one is actually quite small, perhaps the size of an Imperial curled up and featuring only a willow tree with leafy branches reaching to the ground and a few scattered rocks. The wind picks up, stirring the branches enough for you to spy a Mirror dragon, settled at a low desk, a leather coat tossed to the side. There are a mess of papers scattered around his desk, some with hastily written messages and some with ripped edges and torn corners. The Mirror notices you, sets down his quill, and emerges from beneath the tree, offering you a smile as he tosses his coat over his shoulders.
“Hello, a visitor I see. I am Iolite, the clan messenger, and this is what I call my home,” The Mirror says, gesturing to the willow tree and grass island, “Is there anything I can help you with?” |

Origins
|
|
Iolite’s childhood was an unfortunate story. His birthclan was a kind enough place, but they were often too trusting to strangers, which resulted in the kidnapping of Iolite and other hatchlings by a clever tongued thief. Iolite and the other hatchlings were brought to what they were told was a “Dragon Sanctuary”, though it became evident it was actually a laboratory of sorts. The hatchlings were treated more as pawns than anything else, test subjects for various experiments and nothing more. Most of their days were spent listlessly watching blank walls in cramped cages, though it was equally as terrifying to be free of the cages. With poor food and no space, Iolite never grew particularly strong or fast as most Mirror dragons did, instead stagnating in size and growing weaker with each passing day. It was only through the grace of the Arcanist that he was freed--a magical reactor exploded, causing enough damage and pandemonium for him and the other hatchlings to escape and flee the area.
Iolite fled alone, terrified, sickly, and utterly exhausted from the constant lack of food, eventually finding himself idly walking the deserts of the Shifting Expanse. When he at last collapsed at the base of a mesa, Iolite thought himself dead, truly forgotten to the world. However, Elspeth discovered him and took pity on him, dragging him home for Serasorth to heal. She surprised everyone by sticking by his side while he healed and rested, even going so far as to carefully walk him to the open air when his claustrophobia showed itself. |
Wanting to bring Iolite into the clan, Elspeth worked with Nantis to carve Iolite a den at the base of the lair, open to the air but protected by magic, hoping to help with his fear of enclosed spaces. When Iolite recovered from his injuries and exhaustion, he did move into the lair they built for him, partially because of his refusal to enter the underground one the majority of the Flyers resided in. After that, Iolite became the messenger for the clan; once he developed the muscles for running, he became quite fond of the freedom his role brought him.
When the Flyers moved to the Windswept Plateau, Iolite was delighted, rejoicing in the chance to have a lair among his clan without having to be trapped underground. He was one of the first members of the clan to vocalize his support of the move, and went on to track down a suitable location for the clan to live at. Presently, he continues to run messages between the Flyers and their alliances, though he also relishes in the new range of things he can do within the clan. He has taken to running interclan messages--including delivering various supplies for artisans--as well as participating in clan meetings and, on occasion, joining his honorary Mirror pack in various hunts or explorations. He has also been known to spend his spare time simply exploring the lair as he never got to before, or settled among the others mirrors with his mate Ethior by his side; after how long it took for them to get together, neither are in a hurry to add space to their relationship. |

Iolite is a quiet and reserved dragon, a trait that served him well during his childhood, allowing him to fly under the radar. Post-rescue, Iolite found himself slowly becoming more sociable and vaguely trusting of his clanmates, much of which had to do with Elspeth’s insistence of his importance to the Flyers. Now, the reserved nature only really appears with strangers or unfamiliar dragons, though sometimes it emerges when he is forced to converse with a dragon he doesn’t respect. He has become more open and talkative with his friends and close family, enjoying idle conversation more and more, particularly after the move to the Windswept Plateau. He has a strong honor code that he holds to himself with the utmost effort, which also serves to settle which dragons he respects and which dragons he holds in foul regards. He often makes firm decisions on the world and is willing to fight for them, taking up arms in the form of words when he perceives injustice in the world, having learned in the past that silence brings no change.
