It was simply a scavenging patrol that found an abandoned Shadow egg, guarded by a protective Obscuring Goblin. The Goblin, who was named Vanity, was reluctant to let the patrol take the egg, but eventually conceded on the stipulation that he would remain with it. Dragons needed clans, after all... maybe this would be good for the little hatchling growing under the luminescent blue shell.
But when the scavenging patrol carelessly dumped the egg into a nest in their lair, not even caring to find someone to incubate it, Vanity started to get the sense that something wasn’t right. He tried that night to escape with the egg, but he was caught by the keen eye of a Shadow dragon who had happened to be keeping watch. Vanity narrowly escaped being thrown onto the meat stockpile after that, and only survived by bringing up the fact that he was incubating the egg because no one else was. After that, no dragon cared to pay any mind to Vanity out of disdain.

The little hatchling tumbled out of her egg on the night of a new moon, alone except for Vanity. The Goblin, bigger than her at the time, gently took her in his claws and cleaned the amniotic fluid from her scales. With no one but the Shadowbinder watching, Vanity named the little one Coraza. She was already his pride and joy from the moment she took her first breath.
But her clanmates didn’t treasure her nearly as much. The day she was able to, Coraza was enlisted as a gathering slave, spending long, tiring days out picking edible plants for the clan. She was but a little thing, but thankfully she had Vanity to help pick up the slack when she was too exhausted to keep going.
Regardless, she was viewed as being far too slow and beaten for her inefficiency. It didn’t take long for the blows and insults to get under Coraza’s scales, and her once innocent heart quickly started to harden and grow bitter. The only person in her life she didn’t hate was Vanity- everyone else could go rot for all she cared.

She had just barely reached adulthood when things got worse.
The concept of things being even more dreadful than they already were was difficult for Coraza to envision, until she was living it. One evening, after eating her meal, Coraza’s eyes felt unnaturally heavy. The last thing she comprehended was Vanity shaking her, calling her name before everything went black.

When she came to, white hot panic surged through her veins. Her eyelids were still heavy, though, and all she could do was squirm uselessly.
“Coraza.”
The voice of Vanity was the only thing that could steady her. The Obscuring Goblin leaned into her field of vision, deep purple eyes trying to give her some semblance of calm. They were on some sort of cart, bumping along down a dirt road. Pulling the cart was a massive Guardian she had never seen before. All around her were exotic goods and materials, things so rare she had only heard stories about them.
When Coraza tried to move, she quickly became aware of the shackles on her arms, legs, and wings. Before she could panic again, Vanity quietly explained to her what had happened.
Her clan, her clan, had given her away as a reward for the completion of a set of challenges they had devised for fun. She had been a prize. Like she was a stack of satin mice.
After that revelation, the bitterness in Coraza’s heart morphed into vicious, vile fury. She hissed and screamed in her chains, finally letting out the pain that she had been carrying since hatching. Knowing this was good for her, Vanity just let her roar, giving any dragon who peeked into the bed of the cart a stern glare.
Eventually, Coraza tired herself out and slumped back, panting. All she could do now was wait for them to reach their destination, silently resolving that she would fight against her new captors until her last breath. (Vanity, though he didn’t speak to her, could say with just a look that he was planning on doing the same thing.)

Coraza snapped her jaws and screamed at any dragon who crossed her line of vision when they finally stopped to unload. A Wildclaw with crimson wings tried to talk sense into her, telling her that she was no longer a slave- but it was a trick. Surely it had to be!
When the Wildclaw released her from her chains in a show of good faith, Coraza immediately lunged at his throat.
Shortly after, Coraza was shoved to the dirt and bound again so she couldn’t hurt anyone (or herself). She was detained in a cell with Vanity- although for a prison, it was remarkably comfortable. The nest alone was softer than anything she had ever had the luxury to feel on her scales. It didn’t take long for her and Vanity to curl up in it, falling into a light and uneasy slumber.

About a week passed like that. Coraza and Vanity’s every need were attended to by a kind Fae who introduced himself as Omega. The food he served them was more delicious than anything either of them had ever tasted. Coraza still eyed him with suspicion, though, wary of his benevolence. No one could really be trusted here.
Soon after that, a dark colored Nocturne with glowing blue runes on his scales let himself into Coraza’s cell. He easily pinned her down when she tried to pounce on him, and despite her struggles, he bound a glowing purple rune to her skull. Abruptly Coraza’s mind filled with white noise, making her scream out. Then, just as quickly, her consciousness gave way to blackness.

Surprisingly enough, it was all uphill after that.
The rune on her head (called a Shady Emblem, she learned later) was able to steady her unstable emotions and soothe her anxieties, so that she could function properly emotionally. It was like a breath of fresh air.
Once she had recovered from the initial blast of Shadow magic from the talisman, the Nocturne who had placed it on her introduced himself as Rigel. He told Coraza that he -along with two others, Ivy and Sardor- went out the day they recovered her, in order to search for a way to stabilize her. With the help of an elder named Oeagrus, they were able to craft the Shady Emblem.
After that, Rigel gave her an offer. She and Vanity could have a permanent home there with the Blue Lights Guild, free from chains, in return for her services in looking after the Guild’s slaves. She, Rigel assured, could ensure they were treated fairly and without cruelty.
How could she not accept?
And so Coraza and Vanity became the newest members of the Guild. They couldn’t help but pity the hatchlings they trained looked after, but her job was necessary.
Today, Coraza and Vanity always make sure the young slaves are educated well and treated fairly. They reside in their own building along with the slaves in the heart of the Guild’s lair, teaching the little ones the skills they will need later in their lives (and also ensuring that they wouldn’t turn against the Guild or their future masters.)

Omega, the Fae who had cared for her while she was detained, turned out to be a steadfast friend of hers. Not long after she had received the Shady Emblem, Coraza encountered Omega communicating with his servant, a Wraith Hound. She was immediately intrigued, and engaged Omega in a conversation about the hound and the spirit realm. They struck up a friendship soon after that.
And the rest, as they say, is history. Coraza, under Omega’s tutelage, is slowly but surely learning to channel spirits like Omega can, so she can bring them peace. Everyone deserves that, no matter how lost.
