"When I say it doesn't hurt me, it means I can bear it. Nevetheless, I feel the pain."

She couldn't remember a time before she was alone. At night, sometimes, she rests her head on her paws and strains to recall memories--parents, family, clan, flight, anything, but it never comes. It is as though she simply came into being as a wanderer.
It hadn't been all bad. After all, the Tangled Wood wasn't unfriendly to her, somehow, and she had to admit to herself that it was probably because some part of her was dark, and the forest welcomed it. When she thought about it, she supposed that she hadn't always been alone after all; she had Tenebris. She umbra wolf had approached her once, when she was drinking and cooling herself by the water of one of the wood's many silvery pools. Shale had seen its glowing purplish eyes through the shadows of the trees, and stayed where she was. It had come warily, weaving back and forth as it walked, its tail stiff. Shale bowed her head to take another sip of water, and as she did so, the wolf followed suit. After that, it had simply padded by her side wherever she went. Sometimes she wondered if it had been a kindred spirit, no family or memories, and simply sought her out of instinct. But she was grateful for Tenebris. Tenebris was not, however, her charge. Shale hadn't been aware of beginning her Search, but somewhere along the way it had begun. She had finally been welcomed into a clan-- Umbra Sanguis--by another guardian, King. She found it difficult to integrate herself, as she had little to speak about, and many of the others seemed to think her strange and off-putting. Shale withdrew into herself, accustomed to the loneliness and darkness, but when she laid eyes on the brightest dragon she had ever seen in her life, she was immediately bound. Jeanne was her charge, and Shale knew it. A warm, calm feeling rolled over her like a wave when she looked at the brilliant white dragon. And luckily for Shale, Jeanne looked kindly on the guardian, and pitied her for the way she was excluded from the clan. Shale is still dark and quiet, but after seeing Jeanne's approval of the hooded guardian, many of the clan began to drift toward her, slowly introducing themselves and asking how she was--even though the answer was always fine, thank you. Some knew this wasn't true, but none questioned her, and Shale's resilience and calm even through the pain and obvious darkness inside her earned her the respect of most of the clan. It would always be a marvel to Shale that it was her who became the leader of Umbra Sanguis, but it didn't surprise many others, especially not Jeanne, who looked on approvingly. |
