Merrie was always destined for great things. Since the day he was hatched, his mother Varduhi trained him to serve the Gladekeeper as the perfect exalt, awaiting the day he was to leave the clan forever with baited breath. Merrie, growing increasingly frustrated with the way his mother had planned his entire life out for him, decided that running away was the only option. And so one night, as the Circus was leaving on its travels, he stowed away in the back of a caravan.

By the time they noticed the young Nocturne travelling with them, it was much too late for the Circus to turn back. And so they put him to work, performing menial errands and stagehand duties. While this isn't the life he would've wanted for himself either, he appreciates the freedom living with the Circus grants him, and the fact he has actually managed to make friends for the first time in his life! Whenever the circus gets a bit of downtime, he has one of the performers tutor him in their art, hoping to one day find something he's both good at and enjoys enough to take it up permanently.

Due to his somewhat short temper, however, he often finds himself stuck on assistant duty with CeCe. The magician praises him as the best assistant they've ever had, and has asked him on numerous occasions to take on the position full time. Merrie himself maintains that it is definitely not the job for him.
