Fern was born into a large clan, being raised among countless other hatchlings. He was one of the youngest in the bunch, and never received quite as much attention as he wanted, or even needed. The responsibilities of taking care of the young dragons were often split between many different dragons, instead of being given to the parents. Fern didn't get to know his parents very well, and he never knew if they had wanted to know him. They seemed to be distant even when they were nearby, and though they never showed much affection, he still wished that he could have gotten to know them better.

The clan was nomadic, settling down where they could find life and and moving on when the resources had dried up. Though he understood the need of such travel,Fern wanted to be able to settle down, since he hated feeling like he didn't belong. Though the dragons who took care of him were kind and caring, he felt rejected by his parents who seemed to not care about his existence at all. He yearned to find a place where dragons stood by your side and were more like a true family, not this clan with busy and hurried dragons who were unable to give him the time of day.

After some time in one location, the resources in the area began to dwindle, signaling to the leaders of the clan that it was time to move on. Still just a small hatchling, Fern often found himself falling behind the rest of the clan. This wasn't helped by his general reluctance to be constantly traveling. However, on this particular day, a storm began to form quickly and unexpectedly. As the dragons in the clan tried to stay close to one another to make it through the storm, Fern found himself unable to make it to the center of the clan. His flying abilities were not fully developed, and he had been lagging too far behind the others in the clan. The wind separated him from the others and forced him down into a thick forest. Unable to get off the ground in such weather, he traveled by foot in the same direction, trying desperately to not get left behind.

However, by the time the wind had died down and he was able to fly, his clan was long gone, and he knew that he would likely not be able to find his clan. Tired, thirsty, hungry, and disconsolate, Fern decided to rest before continuing further. He traveled into the forest a little more until he found the perfect place to take a nap. Curling up inside a small sack, he quickly fell deep into sleep.

After he felt his body jar against something, he woke up and poked his head out of the owning of the sack, finding himself being scrutinized under the eyes of a bewildered Nocturne, not too much older than him. Fern learned that this dragon was Violet, and soon met Violet’s parents. After explaining his situation, he was eagerly adopted by the couple, and clan, finally finding a new, permanent home. Raised alongside Violet, the two became close friends who learned together. He was taken into the family business of making medicines and potions, helping Violet gather the herbs and plants requested by their mother.

One day, after Fern had grown up, another Coatl joined the clan. Maple loved the beauty of the forest, and Fern soon loved the beauty of Maple. Trying to impress her, he would always keep his eye out for the most colorful and beautiful flowers when gathering plants for Hazel. Each day, he presents her with more and more flowers, each one unique and different from the last, but he knows that the beauty of nature could never compare to hers.
