When the Shade was fought back, not all of it left the planet. Some wisps hid in the earth for decades, even centuries, before choosing a new victim. Unfortunately, Snowsquall's egg was in the wrong place at the wrong time. A single hatchling, there was nothing apparently wrong with the whelp as she hatched and grew. No odd colors, no weird traits, nothing to indicate that she was tainted... nothing until Snowsquall came of age to start exhibiting magic. Ice and snow came naturally to the young Ridgeback, and every day her power grew. Ice began growing on her wings and crown, signalling a great mage in the making, but Snowsquall's hold over the magic waned, and so did her hold on her sanity. There would be weeks the Ridgeback could not remember, places she would wake she had no recollection of being before. Animals avoided her, and Tundra dragons all but herded from her location, warning of something dark that was coming. Soon, word reached her god, the Icewarden, of a dragon who could not be caught and who froze all attackers solid with merely a blink. Coming down from his Fortress, the God easily located the crazed dragon, and took pity on his afflicted child and wiped much of the Shade from Snowsquall's mind with a single claw touch. Assigning the mage with a guardian made of ice, who could restrain the dragon should she lose control again, the Icewarden returned to his Fortress, and Snowsquall left for different lands. Arriving in Crystalspine reaches, Snowsquall had a clear mind for the first time in years. She stuck close to the crystal, and it was that habit that led to her crossing the lair of Clan Molcae. Even though they had no experience with helping Shade-addled dragons, they took her in, promising help and a refuge. |
