Biography
Ward
——————————
|
The candle was burning low, its flame barely enough to illuminate the parchments arranged neatly in front of Ward's eyes. A slight breeze drifted from outside and made the tiny light flicker. The Skydancer frowned in annoyance as the wind ruffled her precious pages. Her failing eyesight was enough of a distraction, without having to constantly rearrange the papers and struggle to pick up where she'd left off.
A light step behind her made the feathers on her neck stand up, but her anxiety lessened as she heard a soft voice, "My, my. Are we burning the midnight oil again?" Ward looked over her shoulder and saw another Skydancer, whose white and purple feathering gleamed into the faint glow: her sister, Ace. Ward pushed her spectaclers a bit higher up her nose so she could glare through them. "I would remind you that this is a candle, not an oil lamp." "And it's also past midnight," Ace laughed. "It is… late," Ward agreed. Time was more of a technicality for the clan librarian, who rarely slept more than a few hours on end. There was plenty of knowledge to be found in the world, after all, and one hardly learned anything while she slept. "And why are you awake at such an hour?" "Bad dream, couldn't sleep," Ace said lightly, but her expression was suddenly troubled. Ward turned around fully. On the table behind her, the candle fizzled, the flame growing dangerously short. The shadows around them lenghtened. "About that place?" the librarian asked softly. She needn't clarify; they both know what that place had been. Ace dipped her head in a weary nod. Ward considered her options. She'd meant to finish drawing out the necessary parameters for the spell she was trying to put together, but that could wait. "Let's go outside and look at the stars," she said, carefully adding a cheery note to her voice. "Then you can tell me the names of all those that you can remember." Normally, her sister would have protested; she always fidgeted during their lessons and let her mind wander elsewhere. Still, to Ward's surprise, her suggestion was met with another nod and a glimmer of a smile. With one last look to the parchments that would undoubtedly be ruffled by the wind soon enough, Ward turned and lead the way out. Behind the two Skydancers, the tiny candle flame faded out in a thin wisp of smoke. by Merredith |
