NaughtyNutella
Soul Mate to Maybelle
Far away from the Focal Point lies Dragonhome, center of the Earth Flight’s activities, and home of the sacred World Pillar, a place associated with ancient memory and ancient mistakes (largely those of the Arcanist, which most Arcane dragons prefer to gloss over). It is a long trek from Dragonhome to the Starfall Isles, and the change of scenery often rocks the sensible roots of most Earth-born dragons. That changes, though, when an Earth-born dragon grows up racing around the virulent pools of the Scarred Wasteland.
NaughtyNutella, though born to the warm stones of Dragonhome, has all the vim and vigor of the Plague-born, coupled with their frightening resistance to any disease under the sun. To top it off, it seems he has natural defenses against minor rogue magic, like wayward charms loosed into the world by amateur practitioners of magic. More than once in his life, he has encountered magic that has gone terribly off course, but rarely has it ever caused any change, physically or otherwise.
It’s as if it just bounces off his hide. Because of this, he was pressured very early on to go into scribe work, specifically scribe work with runes. Runes are dangerous, some even capable of escaping the page and assaulting the nearest living being with their effects, and so few dragons have the courage to tackle the task of scrawling runes into books in the first place. One misspelled character on the protective charms, and a rune can come bursting out of the book. Thankfully, NaughtyNutella shares his father’s brilliance and neat penmanship.
His rune books were of spectacular quality from the start, and he was requested by the magic users of the Starfall Isles before he had even reached his full size. Yearning for something more than bubbling pits of pus, NaughtyNutella eagerly took the job, travelling immediately across the Scarred Wasteland towards employment. Perhaps naively, he believed it was the best thing that could happen to him; he was and continues to be an unconquerable idealist in that way, always believing in the best.
However, better things were still to come, though not before a couple busts. The first few clans he worked for did not appreciate his brazen attitude and boldness towards the clan’s elders, and his employment did not often last long. It irked him, this intolerance for genius and experimentation in the same place. What was so terrible about breaking from convention anyway?
Sure, some safety charms in the rune books needed to stay the same so that dragons didn’t lose an eye or a nose, but NaughtyNutella didn’t see the harm in a little extra flourish, like scented pages or flower-fall summonings. Eventually, though, he found a clan that would appreciate his extracurricular additions. Not only that, but he would find a partner in crime for all his runic shenanigans. Maybelle was everything NaughtyNutella had ever dreamed of: courageous, hard-working, and full of laughter no matter the occasion. \
One of the very first things he did upon being hired was commission some of BeautifulNight’s special paper fashioned from the trees of the Starwood Strand, scribble some very exact runes on it, and leave it outside Maybelle’s lair. When she stepped on it in the morning, it disappeared noiselessly, leaving a shower of rose petals and a cloud of aether cherry scent in its wake. NaughtyNutella was never very good at subtle, after all. But that did the trick. Ever since, the two Coatls have been through thick and thin together.
Now, NaughtyNutella is Maybelle’s first resource when the clan familiars are in an uproar. He cultivates spells meant to calm, or in the worst cases, subdue, purely for the familiar keeper’s use. He has also begun to devote his time to seeking spells, knowing of Maybelle’s deep desire to introduce a flock of Fallout Streaks to the clan’s ever-growing bestiary. So far, pasting feathers to the pages with the appropriate naming runes has only served to make the skinny birds flee, so a new approach is probably in order.
Perhaps swapping the feathers for claw clippings will do? Regardless, NaughtyNutella refuses to give up until he has a solution, until the love of his life finally gets the familiars she so desperately desires. It’s slow going, but at least the thinking involved keeps him busy, not to mention the risks of toying with runes keep him on his toes. More than ones, Maybelle has tried to instill a little caution in him, but he just keeps plowing along, having a grand old time all the while. Someday, he knows he’ll get it right. He knows it!
