PERSONALITY
The following material is from the penultimate draft of The Ascent of Humanity. A few proofreading comments and footnotes haven’t been incorporated, but overall, the content is 99% congruent with the print version of the book now available on Amazon.com. I have put the entire text on line because I believe it is important for these ideas to circulate as widely as possible in the present time of crisis. In the book, I write of a coming shift from a profit-taking economy to a gift economy, from an economy of “how can I take the most?” to “how can I best give of my gifts?” This future, in which the anxiety of “making a living” no longer drives us, will arise out of the transformation in the human sense of self that is gathering today. But it is not only a future.
OCCUPATION
We can live it now too. It is in this spirit that I offer you The Ascent of Humanity on line. The cover price of the 600-page print edition is $25. I leave it to you to decide what is a fair price for this online edition, and you are of course also welcome to read it for free. On the voluntary payment page linked below I explain a bit more about why I am not making people pay for this work. The planet is returning to the spirit of the Gift, and I am pleased to join in that turning. Voluntary payment. |

STORY
Yes, humanity is vastly overrated because we need the space for the post-human. I’m drawing more on Donna Haraway than the transhumanists like Ray Kurzweil. Haraway argues that we need to do away with the essentialist notions that the human is a concept we must protect. The human is conceptually a dead end and the idea that we must protect humanity is more problem than positive. Instead in the place of the human should be something more chimeric, fusing animal and technology in order to be a space of creation. Humanity is a collection of semantic obfuscations that don’t really describe lived experience, instead we need to beyond the human into a space which reconfigures and recontextualizes those signifiers into something different and without an essential identity. Humanity isn’t overrated because of the things we’ve done or the impact we’ve had on the earth. It isn’t a matter of it being a concept that lacks descriptive value and that enforces a non-existent commonality philosophically. I’d also argue, from the other end, that the lack of value in “humanity” comes from the ways the concept has been deployed as a restrictive type conferred upon those abjected by those within, forcing an identity politics within the human. To wit, humanity is conceptually determined by its relation to an in group which meet certain essential factors. |

EXTRA STORIES
WHY IS HUMANITY OVERRATED? wrote:
Even if you expand this to all **** sapiens sapiens you leave out other important and intelligent life and give privilege to a specific in group denying that semantic identity of the human to other intelligent life. Farcical though some may see it that we have chimpanzees and dolphins going to court for rights, that comes from a basic conception that only humans have the essential quality of rights rather than looking to how they express things under the law. But even before that, we often semantically don’t confer humanity to all **** sapiens sapiens, but instead cut out some as “inhuman” for their actions. This isn’t a matter of blastocysts and fetuses, but a matter of how we dehumanize the worst among us or those we disagree with or even just those we abject. Conceptually, this shows the problems with humanity, that is something we can give and take away linguistically in ways that have consequences. Whether minorities like black people when the humanist movement began or transpeople now, the concept of human has moved depending on essentializing factors. We shouldn’t be looking for filiation to a semantic essentialism, but instead removing that confusion. Humanity is overrated because it leads to dehumanization and thus a linguistic confusion.
