Montezuma

The Exiled Emperor
Proud | Honest | Intelligent | Friendly | Charming

Personality
Montezuma is a true royal, very proud and full of himself. He thinks he's perfect and there's nobody who comes even close to him. Or at least that's how he acted when he came to this clan. He's still very proud of his royal origin.

Montezuma came to this clan as an arrogant and entitled coatl. He was very, very self-centered and always looking down on other dragons in the clan, sometimes angering them with what he said to them. He had to learn to listen to others, understanding their feelings and thoughts. Today, he's much kinder, though still very honest with his thoughts. He's learned when to stay silent, but he's kept his talkative and open personality. He's full of life and really likes to show it, nowadays much more than ever before. He can even smile sometimes and can sometimes find himself in a conversation about the most trivial and ordinary things. He can still be very proud of himself and his achievements.

Even when he was this entitled little emperor, he still had that responsible side. As a royalty, he felt like he always needed to be better than anyone else, and that he needed to be there to guide them. He's learned diplomacy, different languages and history. He's a very good leader, charismatic and intelligent. He still keeps his distance from dragons that he knows much less, and still wants to be in charge of the clan leadership in a way.

For someone who grew up in tropical lands, he enjoys the cold of the Icefields probably too much (though he misses the warm weather sometmes). He likes conversations and being the centre of attention. He can still boast about his abilities and personality traits, "how kind and generous he is", for example, but it's said more jokingly than seriously. He likes travelling and getting to know all the new clans and nations. It took him some time, but he became a true member of this clan and he loves it. He loves finally belonging somewhere.

History
Montezuma was a hatchling of two mighty coatls, who ruled a large coatl society in the Viridian Labyrinth. The only hatchling, in fact. He was the one that would rule over the coatls after them. From a very early age, he was taught all the things an emperor must know. He has always been very temperamental, so he wasn't a calm hatchling. When he didn't like something, he let everyone in the palace know. He was very hard to teach, as he wanted to go out and play with others rather than sit in the cold, stone rooms of the palace, and learn about mathematics, astronomy, diplomacy and history.

He was lead to believe he's the perfect dragon, that nobody can even reach his clawtips. He always looked down on lowborn coatls, thinking they're dirty and stupid. He didn't like other dragon breeds either, he thought Wildclaws and Mirrors were savages, that Tundras are stupid and too forgetful, Spirals are too hyperactive, Ridgebacks are dirty thieves and so on... He never thought he could be wrong, and nobody opposed his ideas either. Thinking he's perfect, flawless, he thought his opinions were facts.

He grew up and some decades later, his father passed away and he was crowned as the new emperor. That smug smile he held when he looked down upon the lowborn coatls, he would never forget it. How proud he felt. He's the perfect emperor and he'll make the world better. His world, at least. But he never did. He only cared about himself and his needs. The dragons that didn't live in the palace? They surely didn't need all that food and all that treasure... And those savages, trying to make contact with his glorious empire... No, he won't be their ally, ever. Nature dragons were so stupid, always wanting to celebrate life and nature, but never him. He was jealous over the deities the dragons worshipped and wanted to become one too. He dedicated everything to it, ignoring the needs of his people, not caring about them at all. He saw only himself.

His people were becoming more and more mad with him. It all escalated one night, when they bursted into the royal palace and took him away. They took his crown, his beautiful golden crown, and melted it. They said they would never allow a coatl this terrible to rule over them. He wouldn't be their ruler no longer. And then... they exiled him. They didn't want him to ever enter this small empire again. If he did try, they would kill him on the spot. And so he ran away...

He wandered through Sornieth, looking for a place to stay. But his reputation spread much faster than he could travel, so everyone gave him a look of disgust and sent him away. He felt lonely. He felt lost in this big world. He couln't even hunt, he was never taught how to do it. So he was hungry and tired, hunted by all the beasts and hostile dragons that wandered this land. When he was in the Southern Icefield, he passed out. Exhausted, his energy slowly leaving his body. He knew too well he shouldn't fall asleep, but he was too tired to get up. So he closed his eyes and waited for the winter to take him.

He woke up in pain. It took him a few seconds to realise he was alive. And that everything in his body hurt, every single bone and feather. He didn't want to open his eyes. He didn't want to see where he was. He was scared.
"I don't think he'll make it," he heard a feminine voice. "He must've been there for hours. I remember how much trouble I had when I came into the Icefields. And I wasn't passed out. Plus, he's a Coatl, he's not used to cold at all." Oh, she dares to doubt him? His ability to survive? He tried to move, and he did, but it hurt. A lot. He whimpered. Then he heard some steps hurrying to his body.
"Are you alive?" he heard another voice, a different one from the one before. "Does anything hurt?" Everything, he wanted to say. My whole body. But he was unable to. A sound came from his throat, signaling he had heard everything. That he's awake. "Don't try to move, I'll bring you medicine." And the steps slowly disappeared. He tried to open his eyes. Slowly. He knew he'd be blinded by the light around him unles there was darkness. But he doubted those dragons wanted to act on their other senses.
"So you did it, huh? You're not that weak then." He'd frown if he could. "You're lucky. I've seen many dragons whose bodies now lay frozen and hollow in the snow. We thought you were gone too, but mom sensed a small remnant of your energy and decided we should try to save you, so we did." Oh, there is that eyelid. Only one so far, and the low light from the fire nearby still hurt a lot. But he had to endure those first moments. He looked up at the dragon that was speaking to him. It was an Imperial female, white skin and golden-brown wings and mane. And a green belly scales. Then he noticed her red eyes. A Plague dragon. She must be a real savage, wanting nothing than death, he thought immediately. She wore armour, so she must've been a fighter.
"Oh, you're trying to open your eyes. Good." The voice that left before was back. His turqoise eye fell on a red coloured tundra female. She held some herbs, probably to help with recovery and pain. "I brought something to make you feel better," she smiled at him. The Imperial stepped aside as the Tundra fed Montezuma the herbs. They tasted awful, but he knew he had to eat them. Then he closed his eye and slowly fell asleep again. But this time he felt safe.

It took him a few days to recover. That was the time to explore the lair of his saviours. It wasn't big and only a few dragons lived here so far. They lived at the base of the mountains and made lair in the caves and around them. A small clan, but it seemed to work well so far. He saw quite a lot of food in the hoard in one of the caves, as well as many other items. No gold, though. He missed the metal so much. The dragons seemed to somehow follow a green-yellow Tundra male named Maki. To Montezuma though, he didn't look like the best leader. He let the dragons do almost whatever they wanted, and the Coatl didn't like it at all.

He attempted to put himself into the leadership. He let everyone know that he was a royal (and even if he didn't, everyone would know by how he acted all the time). Slowly, but surely he tried to raise in power. But there was one dragon, one deity-damn dragon that knew. The black Imperial. He knew what Montezuma wanted to do. And he kept an eye on him. Of course Montezuma always acted like nothing was happening. But the Imperial didn't allow Montezuma to get even close to Maki. The Coatl then questioned him why. And the answer was simple - your royal blood doesn't mean you should rule over us. What?! How dare he?! Montezuma would never allow defeat! But then... he did... Those years ago, when he was cast away from his own land.

He decided to lay low for now and try to learn how the clan works. He had to learn how to hunt for himself and how to survive in the cruel climate of the Southern Icefield. And he suffered. The dragons who taught him all the things weren't the kindest either. Killunia, the white Imperial,
didn't even try to be nice to him. She explained she had gotten into this region very young, as a hatchling. Before Maki found her in a snowstorm, she had to learn how to survive here for herself. The nature, the dragons and the beastclans are cruel and cold here. No mercy. That wass what he needed to learn. And he did. It took him quite a long time, but he did.

His time in the clan taught him a lot of things. He learned how to take care of himself, because there is nobody who has your back but you. And he learned that life is cruel. He watched his clanmates fight with monsters and other dragons. And just sitting aside, he felt useless. Deep down in his not-yet rotten soul, he wanted to help them. He didn't really know why, as he'd never felt compassion before. But these dragons... they'd showed him so much after he decided to stay. And thus, his magical powers manifested one day. Powers that could burn enemies into a crisp, but also those that could heal injured allies. He trained his powers in secret, when he thought nobody would watch him. As always though, he was, by a certain red-eyed Imperial.

One day she offered him to go with her and her mate to a "hunt". They didn't hunt in the Icefield, no, no. They travelled to the lands he has seen in his life, when he was looking for a place to stay in. They fought with many monsters and both Imperials took many blows, scarring their skin, bleeding. He felt a tug in his chest. And so he called upon the powers in him, and focused on the two. Their wounds slowly closed and then he saw Killunia smile at him. It felt good. Very good.

And so Montezuma found his place in the clan. Travelling all over Sornieth to battle various beasts and dragons, to heal his allies and to summon lightnings at his enemies. And slowly he started to change. He lost all his prejudices he had about other flights and breeds. He slowly realised all dragons are unique personalities. During his travels, he managed to befriend some familiars and a certain snake from his homeland. He didn't miss his old home, as he found something much, much better. The coatls he lived with, they never showed him what it is he's doing wrong. These dragons did, and so he could learn from it. He was still proud of his royal heritage, but was much wiser and more mature. He earned his spot as the clan leader's advisor, which was something he was very much content with.

He made a crown from bone pieces of his enemies, not only as a trophy, but to symbolise his rebirth as an emperor, a new being, and also as a reminder of what he once was. He didn't need gold and jewelry (but he sill liked it) and the other dragons to serve him. He needed their trust and friendship. And food. And treasure. Oh well, some things don't change, do they?

Trivia
  • He is named after the famous Aztec emperor Montezuma (or Moctezuma) II.
  • I wanted him initially to stay that arrogant *****, but then I changed my mind and decided he would undergo a serious character developement.
  • Even though he changed a lot, he still appreciates gold and jewellery.
  • I knew I wanted a coatl with the Aztec aesthetic as soon as I saw them, so Montezuma is the one for that! That's also why, even though he's a royalty, I didn't want use any too European-looking crowns on him. I still want my Aztec apparel. ;_;
  • That accent was supposed to be temporary... Not anymore, I guess.
