A simple-dressed skydancer floated overhead like a kite on the breeze, seeing the large gathering of emissaries and messengers below, in addition to noblemen and foreign dignitaries. It had been a long time since he had seen anything of the like- such pompous gatherings were a rare sight within the laid-back borders of the wind flight. Curious of what could be going on, the young courier tucked back his wings and fell toward the group below.
With barely enough time to spare, he flared them back out, knocking a few hats and capes askew with the large backdraft from his wings as he landed... sort of. A few feet from the ground he tumbled into an unceremonious heap in the grass, tangled up in his own limbs. Derisive laughter, snorts, and venomous whispers drifter over to him, sentiments akin to "Who invited this bozo?" and "What sort of kingdom would ever let their messengers be so undisciplined?"
Shaking himself like a dog, he rolled back onto his feet and bounced up. A nearby dragon looked at him out of the corners of her eye, and asked him "And precisely where are you from, pray tell?"
"I'm from Namesong." He dipped his head toward the ground, stretching his back out like a cat- landings like that always made him feel a little stiff.
"Namesong? I've never heard of such a kingdom." Her hauty tone suggested that if she hadn't heard of it, it wasn't a place worth hearing of.
"Oh, it's not a kingdom!" His face brightened up as he cheerfully informed her of his homeland. "It's just a small clan from the edge of the Reedcleft Ascent." His face beamed, as if such a place could only be the best of places to boast loyalty to. She gave a large sniff, and fluttered away.
Undeterred, he started skipping through the assembly of people, casually passing by in an effort to see what was at the 'front' of this gathering. One of the dragons next to him glared down his nose upon spying him working through the crowd. "And what would a commoner from a no-name clan like yours be doing here? Get lost!"
At this point, he stopped, cocking his head at the aggressor. "And why do you have any more right to be here than I, sir?"
"I am here to forge an alliance for my clan and secure the hand of one of the princesses of Akashaa!" He seemed to puff up upon saying this, inflated with superiority. His gaze briefly turne to the front again, where a pair of what could only be monarchs, and a few who must be their children, were conversing with various dignitaries.
"Well, maybe I'm here to do that as well."
"Preposterous!" He scoffed, slinking through the crowd, trying to get close to the glowing group at the front. Letting the other pave the way, the skydancer followed behind, effortlessly dancing up to the front. The other seemed quite miffed that he had followed.
"Oh shoo, you! What would someone like you know of royalty?"
"Well, come to think of it, our clan has lots of princes... There's FrontLines, who was the heir to Tindog of the Clan of the Severed Kitestrings before he decided to leave on his Journey. Then there's Hero, though I don't know if he counts.... he sort of got run out of his kingdom because of some hearsay that he murdered his brother, so he's really just a mercernary now. And Hotstepper! She's a pureblood 7th generation princess that has ties back to the leaders of 32 different clans from around Sornieth!" His crest stood erect after giving this little rundown of his clan's members, like a cockerel puffing up it's plumage from pride. His head tilted to the side as he paused, deep in thought. "And I suppose..... that would just leave one more." His head dipped down between his shoulders in a sudden show of embarrassment. "I may not be much to look at, but..." For once he seemed relatively demure and still, his claws scuffing the ground. "...I'm the adopted son of the founders of Namesong, BrokenRoad and MountainMomma..." The dark striped fur of his face hid a blush as he straightened up, falling back to sit on his haunches.
The other dragon stood stock still, incredulous. He was about to speak when the skydancer cut him off. "I'm SimpleLullaby, by the way. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintence." At this moment, the dragon realized the speech had not been entirely for his benefit- Lullaby was gazing over his head- directly at one of the princesses of Akashaa. She smiled at him, and his blush deepened. He attempted a bow, but only succeeded in falling back into a heap in the grass, making her laugh. Lullaby thought it was the most beautiful sound he had ever heard, and sighed deeply, just content to lay there, tail slowly wagging like a puppy as he gazed at a foreign princess.
How funny life is, he wondered, where a goofball like me can live as a simple courier, and yet fall out of the sky and into the laps of royalty, not once, but twice.
