Biography

Veneficus Ferronari
the forgotten smile
Veneficus wasn't always a bitter and silent dragon. There were times, when he was gleeful and enthusiastic, when nothing could bring him down, not pain nor grief or harsh judgment from others, when he took great pride in being the son of his parents. He was the younger sibling, born in the fiery, hot lair of Voronwa, a Clan that used to be an ally and still is in some way to Plague-Fang, to loving parents that dotted him and his older brother Abraxas, loved them more than anything else. In his childhood, it was Abraxas that was the bitter one, the grim one. Struggling with his overflowing powers, Abraxas got a lot of negative attention for accidentally starting a fire while Veneficus earned the praise for being a sweet and curious child. Both Abraxas and Veneficus followed their mother back to her plague roots, eager to learn more about their family, their story and their roots, but while Abraxas was glad to get away from the attention, the subdued fear everybody had around him, Veneficus was sad to leave his father behind, he cried bitter tears, didn't want to part with either his mother Nibulem, brother Abraxas or his father Bawx. Only after his father promised him to come to visit often, Veneficus stopped his crying, somewhat satisfied by this makeshift solution. It was always like this during the time he grew up. Plague-Fang, his mothers Clan, had her busy, often it was just Veneficus and his brother Abraxas, but they somehow make it work, maybe in slightly dysfunctional ways but it worked well for them.

Years came by and went without a thing happening that was out of the ordinary for a Clan in the most dangerous flights of Sornieth, Plague-Fang thrived and grew, members came and went but for Veneficus and Abraxas things stayed the same, they trained under their grandfather Charis, spent the sparse spare time of their mother together or went out to either visit their father or fight against the wild beasts in the outskirts of Plague-Fangs lair. It was there when Veneficus met his first love, a female warrior that had injured herself during her contract. Enchanted by her beauty, Veneficus brought her back to his home, tended to her wounds. His brother warned him about trusting a stranger too fast, about being too naive and that he didn't knew a thing about this female, but Veneficus didn't listen, joked about Abraxas being jealous. He had no idea how correct he had been with this silly joke. When Veneficus and the female became closer to each other, he often saw his brothers bitter glare, his poisonous sneer on Abraxas' face. The female and Veneficus had a whirlwind like affair, that ended abruptly with her getting pregnant. He was overjoyed but she was terrified, didn't want to keep the children. His lover didn't listen to Veneficus' pleas, she was determined to get rid of their children. One night after an especially heated argument, she just disappeared. Stormed out of the lair and didn't returned.

Veneficus was worried, he searched the outskirts in a vain attempt to find his lost lover, didn't listened to his brothers voice of reason, to stop wasting time, to ask the others for help if he really wanted to get her back. That she wasn't the right one for him. Angry, Veneficus snapped at Abraxas, shouted at him that he didn't even knew what love was, how could he, Abraxas had been alone his entire life and would always be because everybody was scared of him. In this moment, Veneficus wished he could take those words back, for they had broken something in his brothers soul, Abraxas became silent, closed himself off more and more until one morning he too was gone. But unlike Veneficus' lover, Abraxas returned. Heavily wounded, on the edge of dying but with news for Veneficus. He had done what his brother couldn't, he had found Veneficus' lover, along with her real family, her mate and her other children. She was the one that had injured him so severely, that had laughed at Abraxas' bumbling attempts to get her to coming back to Veneficus. She had called his younger brother a naive child, a toy only good for being used and then thrown away. In his anger, Abraxas had lashed out at her, but she had overpowered him, injured and then left him behind to bleed out slowly.

Abraxas didn't survived the night, but he died with a rare smile on his lips, able to gift Veneficus the questionable gift of truth, able to do something of use, something selfless for the first and only time in his short life. Some would say, that this string of traumatic events had been the start of Veneficus' slow change of character, that his smiles were a lot less bright after this, his laughter faint and hollow, the gaze of his eyes duller than before. Maybe they were right. Veneficus didn't remember much of the day that ended everything. His life in Plague-Fangs lair, his home, his friends lives. Suddenly the ground had started to shake, to give in under his weight, he remembered that he was falling, screams ringing out around him, swallowed by the sickening crunch of stone crushing living bodies to bloody dust. His grandfather, Charis, had rescued him, pulled him out of the river just in time before the waves and the falling debris could pull Veneficus under, drown him and snuff his life out like a candlelight. Veneficus came back to consciousness hours after the disaster, hurting all over his body and to the cries of his distressed family. His sister sobbed while tending to his wounds, his mother was shaking and trap in shock, his grandfather looked centuries older, cheeks stained with dried tears and blood, his claws were dull and scratched open from turning every stone in hope to find life under it.

Life changed after this, Veneficus became more and more silent, gone were his smiles, his laughs, the will to make others feel better. Replaced by nothingness, Veneficus started to feel numb, hollow, his sister recovered, he watched how his mother found back from her state of shock, not quite to her old self but enough to be called normal, even his grandfather managed to keep up hope, Charis spoke about a new beginning, about starting anew, finding a home perfect for them and he believed it, Veneficus – just like the others – swallowed greedily every ounce of hope Charis was feeding them with. But it didn't changed how he felt, hollow, numb, like a burden. Where Ceranna could heal, mend their wounds, where Nibulem found them food and water, where Charis lead them with unwavering determination, Veneficus could offer nothing. His broken bones didn't allow him to use his weapon, his fragile state of mind prevented him from using his inner magic. When Charis found them a home, Veneficus had found a delicate inner balance, able to shake off the feeling of being a burden, able to finally help with something. It was not perfect, not even close to it, but for the first time since the disaster, Veneficus didn't felt fear when he thought about what the future might hold.
