It is the unknown in which these battles thrive the most, when neither light nor dark were allowed a first foothold, allowed a head start against the other. This was the very cause with Aether. She was an egg found in a long abandoned nest, no other dragons or even creatures in sight. Though she was found alone the skydancer was raised within a clan of ancient dragons. Zeus and Hera, the leaders of the clan, adopted her as one of their own and raised her. Her adoptive parents did not raise her in the way one would expect, however. Instead of being raised in a family filled with nurturing actions and love, Zeus and Hera forced the young dragon to train nonstop daily. They didn’t want their daughter to be weak, to be defenseless, to be useless. They hadn’t wanted a daughter; they’d wanted a warrior. There was no childhood for Aether. She would wake at dawn and train endlessly no matter what the conditions were, and she would not stop until the sun had set and left the world bathed in darkness. Rain or shine, summer or winter, she trained with such a ferocity that the other members of the clan took notice. Often times there would be members who would watch in appreciation as she trained, the skydancer oblivious to their gaze. Though it had not been intentional, her actions caused their respect for her to grow. When her father believed she was ready, he put her in the ranks of the clans warriors. Even at her age, several years younger than the others and nowhere near as experienced as them, she swiftly rose in the ranks. When the position became available, Aether became the clan’s general. Many believed that she would be a fair general, rough when she needed to be and soft when it was required of her. What many forgot to remember was that she’d been an abandoned raised and though she had been adopted, it had not been into a family, it had been into a arena. There was no love to be found within her. And though the light fought valiantly, it wasn’t long before darkness was able to prevail more often, gaining in the ongoing race for control of the skydancer, the warrior. Aether was a powerful warrior, loyal to her clan first and her adoptive parents second. Though the darkness was winning, betrayal and disloyalty were not words known to her. There were not many dragons that counted the golden dragon as a friend. They often found her too cruel in situations that required a gentler talon, a more caring nature. Aether was not the dragon. She saw things as only good and evil, light and dark, innocent and guilty. There was no room for gray, it did not exist in her world and so it did not exist in her nature. But no dragon could overcome her, she’d been trained to well and she was too loyal to the clan and her parents for anyone to do anything else. That is, until Autumn and Terra banded together. |

Unfortunately for them, Clio learned of their plan. She was the clan's historian and seemed to have ears everywhere. Approaching the clan members and sharing with them what she had learned, they immediately recruited a dragon from another clan to assist their adopted daughter in ending this. The dragon's name was Athena and she was a great strategist. Once told of the planned coup, she reported the information to Aether, explaining she was there to help in any way she could. When she learned of this betrayal, Aether was furious and immediately gathered together several of her most loyal soldiers and they stormed where the two rebels spent time planning their coup. The battle lasted long and was quite bloody. As payment for their actions, the general said that she would spare them their lives but they would wish they were killed. They would never see their children grow, would never see the colors of the sunset, would never see… anything. With a slash of her talons, she blinded the two mates and with a swish of her tail, she left them there, bleeding and moaning in agony. It was weeks before Autumn or Terra could even leave the cave they had been in. Aether may have been a great warrior, a great leader, but after her actions with the almost-rebels, respect was not the only thing that the clan felt towards her. Respect was only a fleeting thought now. Instead, whenever she walked among them, they would avoid her bright eyes as if she could look into their souls and pick out all of the bad and punish them for it. In trying to keep her clan safe from the evil she always saw in the world, she had alienated herself from them. The darkness had, for the first time, conquered a dragon. It played the part of righteousness well, acted as if it were doing the part of a good dragon, but what it really craved was that fear of the other dragons. It fed off of it, and though it was done without her realization, Aether fed off of it as well. |
