Biography

Pelagic Sea Snake

The Pelagic Sea Snake, also known as the Yellow-Bellied Sea Snake (Pelamis platura) is a tropical sea snake found in every tropical ocean except the Atlantic. Known for its sharply contrasting colors and paddle-like, patterned tail, these fascinating reptiles dwell in warm ocean waters and hunt fish. They hunt their prey with potent neurotoxic venom!

Like their earthly namesakes, these Coatl are uncharacteristically fond of water, and spend enormous amounts of time diving beneath the waves, shedding water easily off their feathers when they surface carrying envenomed seafood. They love to play by pulling other dragons into the water with them-- which means they rarely get along with Ridgebacks.

Fun Facts:

- Pelagic Sea Snakes cannot filter all the salt out of ocean water; they wait for the rain, and sip from the lighter rainwater that floats on top of the denser saltwater in order to hydrate themselves.
- Although their venom is potent for their fishy prey, no human deaths from their bites have ever been recorded.
- Its vast territory makes it the only sea snake in the Hawaiian Islands, and one of only two snakes that can be found in New Zealand.
- Although the Panama Canal has created a passage from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean, the Pelagic Sea Snake cannot cross it because the canal is freshwater.
