Biography
Baroness
Karth Royalty Conspirator |
HARKONNEN the Baroness
May the Bridges I Burn Light My Way
The Court of Karth is not for the faint of heart. One of the last remaining WeyrHolds still standing after the shattering of the Weyrs, Karth was never home to A Deity, and perhaps this is why it has endured. Ruling by blood and iron, the Baroness Harkonnen sits upon a throne of bones and ignores the whispers of how she came to claim it. As with all the females of her family line, while her brothers fought and died in battle, she was tutored in the ways of the Shade Dancers until she was old enough to assume her duties as the Patron of the City - a title she took at an unusually young age, after the sudden and untimely death of her father the Baron. With no surviving male heirs, the Baroness's claim to the throne of bones was seemingly unquestionable. But many refused to accept accept that the younger sister of their valiant, yet tragically deceased, twin Princes would claim what they could no longer... Especially with rumours floating of a marriage proposal her father had been working on that would have exchanged his daughter for peace with the rival city of Belfyr - a proposal now dropped as stone cold dead as the Baron himself. Strange, that. The fighting raged for thirteen bloody days, streets running crimson with dragonsblood as anyone with enough ego and arrogance to stake a claim fought for the contested throne. By the fourteenth day the competitors had all slain each other, leaving the bloodstained Baroness's emergence and ascent to the throne a graceful and peaceful affair. While the citizens of Karth enjoy a prosperous peace under the Baroness's governance, the members of Court are not extended the same; Karth is notorious for its viperous political climate, where assassinations are par for course. Still, those of Nobility who have yet survived the warring of the Weyrs gravitate to the Boneyard Throneroom, drawn by its well-defended walls and its large and well-maintained army. Since taking the throne, the Baroness has made peace with Belfyr and expanded Karth's trade across the Ocean of Wyrms, having signed a treaty with the Skyeaters, a sky-bound race of Dragons with wings so large as to block out the sun. Skyeaters typically spend their entire lives aloft, making them elusive and secluded from the other races of dragonkind; how, exactly, the Baroness managed to seal this trade agreement is a mystery to all. Karth is now the most prosperous of the remaining WeyrHolds, and this makes it an obvious target for raiders and rival Holds. But Karth's large standing army is both well paid and well trained, and the Baroness has her own ways of securing peace with her neighbours. It's said that she takes up romances with as much whimsy and change as the ocean, and her elite order of hand-chosen Courtesans are the most legendary lovers in the world. Personality stuff |
