We desire the truth, but even when we have it, we refuse to look. "Laa shay'a waqi'un moutlaq bale kouloun moumkine. These are the words spoken by our ancestors that lay at the heart of our creed. Where others blindly follow the truth, remember..." Nothing is true. "Where others are limited by morality or law, remember..." Everything is permitted. "We work in the dark, to serve the light. We are assassins." Nulla è reale, tutto è lecito. What is one, but the sum of their memories. We are the stories we live, and the tales we tell our selves. My story is merely one of many billions, and the world will not suffer if it ends too soon. "It is a good life we lead, brother." The best. May it never change. "And may it never change us." I do this not for myself. I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also was like chasing the wind. For in much wisdom, lies much grief, and one that increaseth knowledge, increaseth sorrow. Liberty can be messy, but it is priceless. Compio questo sacrificio per il bene superiore. In my youth, I had liberty, but I did not see it. I had time, but I did not know it and I had love but I did not feel it. Many decades would pass before I understood the meaning of all three, and now in the twilight of my life this understanding has passed into contentment. Love, Liberty and Time, once so disposable are the fuels that drive me forward. Love, most especially, mio caro, for you, our children, our brothers and sisters and for the vast and wonderful world that gave us life and keeps us guessing. I have lived my life as best I could, not knowing its purpose, but drawn forward like a moth to a distant moon. And here, at last, I discover a strange truth. That I am only a conduit for a message that eludes my understanding. Who are we, who have been so blessed to share our stories like this? To speak across centuries? Maybe you will answer all the questions I have asked. Maybe you will be the one to make all this suffering worth something in the end. The Creed of the Assassin Brotherhood teaches us that nothing is forbidden to us. Once, I thought that meant we were free to do as we would. To pursue our ideals, no matter the cost. But now, I understand. Not a grant of permission. The Creed is a warning. Ideals too easily give way to dogma. Dogma becomes fanaticism. No higher power sits in judgement of us. No supreme being watches to punish us for our sins. In the end, only we ourselves can guard against our obsessions. Only we can decide whether the road we walk carries too high a toll. We believe ourselves redeemers, avengers, saviours. Only a mind free of impediment is capable of grasping the chaotic beauty of the world. This is our greatest asset. We make war on those who oppose us, and they in turn make war on us. We are quick to judge, but slow to correct ourselves. We condemn what we do not understand. We dream of leaving our stamp upon the world... even as we give our lives in a conflict that will be recorded in no history book. Yet it is all a matter of perspective. There is no single path through life that is righteous, fair and brings no harm. After all, the difficulty sometimes lies in remembering how easy life was, before the world changed. Significance comes not from a single act, but rather the context in which it is performed. All that we do, all that we are, begins and ends with ourselves. To say that nothing is true, is to realize that the foundations of society are fragile, and that we must be the shepherds of our own civilization. To say that everything is permitted, is to understand that we are the architects of our actions, and that we must live with their consequences, whether glorious or tragic. Twenty-two years ago, I stood where I stand now – and watched my loved ones die, betrayed by those I had called friends. Vengeance clouded my mind. It would have consumed me, were it not for the wisdom of a few strangers, who taught me to look past my instincts. They never preached answers, but guided me to learn from myself. We don't need anyone to tell us what to do. We are free to follow our own path. Yet there are those who will take that freedom from us, and too many of you gladly give it. But it is our ability to choose – whatever you think is true – that makes us alive... There is no book or teacher to give you the answers, to show you the path. Choose your own way! Do not follow me, or anyone else. _ _ _ |
