Capriccio and Tobias looked at each other warily. The experiment seemed like a good idea, no, a marvel of an experiment at first, but as they looked over their work, they were not as sure. The point of their project was to make a robot that had the capacity to think for itself and look like a dragon, although not exactly.

They looked back to the table in front of them. On this large, rectangular table was what seemed to be a male Pearlcatcher lying on its belly. Its body shone from its metal components while its glass underbelly contained green liquid. Even the hair was replicated, made out of wires, while the wings were stretched, fabric-like solar panels. It lay still, as though sleeping, waiting for its makers to awaken him.

“You ready?” asked Tobias. Capriccio shook his head, “When is a dragon ever fully ready?” Tobias gave a nod and walked towards the control panel. Looking down at the buttons, dials, and lever, he breathed deeply then pulled the lever, activating the two Tesla coils. The coils began to hum, and Tobias slowly turned one of the dials, which increased the pitch from the coils.

Suddenly, a lightning bolt struck the robot. It made Capriccio jump from his safe perch, but he settled back down and noticed that the body did not seem to stir. “Increase the power level,” he said to Tobias, “It wasn’t enough to start him.” Tobias turned the dial further and bit his lip as he looked back to the table. Another lightning bolt struck the body, then another. Still not seeing the body stir, Tobias shook his head, “Enough. It doesn’t seem to be working. We’ll have to check back on our calculations.” He lowered the power down and then pulled back on the lever.

Capriccio looked sullen in his disappointment, ears and wings drooping. Tobias walked back towards his pupil, and perhaps now equal, and gave his head a gentle pat. “We’ve been at this awhile, so I can understand that you want this to be a success after all the work we’ve put in. It’s part of the learning process – you have to learn what not to do in order to uncover the solution.” The Spiral gave a half-hearted smile to the Guardian, uncertain if he fully believed in an eventual success. They’ve been at this for years after he finished F.I.D.O. Maybe I should just throw in the towel?

Yet, even with that thought, a sound in front of him caused his ears to perk up – on the table! The liquid in the belly was bubbling, pushing some of the liquid slowly through the pipes and tubes that acted as arteries through the robot’s body. Both Tobias and Capriccio were mesmerized as the components, one by one, lit up, activated by the liquid and self-sustaining electricity in the robot’s body. The eyes were the last to light, and the robot slowly picked up its head and peered around the room.

“We did it,” Capriccio said, just barely above a whisper, as though his words may break the spell and return the new life back into an immobile and dead form. Tobias’ mouth slowly emerged into a wide grin as he took in the sight before him, observing how the robot was reacting. It was now trying to understand its limbs - wiggling its claws, shaking it tail, and stretching it wings.

Eventually, the robot tried to put some weight on its right hand in order to lift its body up. The effort caused him to fall forward, his face striking the table as his right part of his body slipped off the table. It caused the two onlookers to gasp and hurry to help the robot. They adjusted him so his body was fully on the table again. The robot stared at them, observing every action they took and analyzing the expressions and features of their faces.

When the two felt that the robot looked safely adjusted upon the table and no damage had befallen it, they exhaled, not realizing they were holding their breath in fear that it was damaged so soon after coming to life.

“My name is Capriccio,” said the Spiral to his creation, “Ca-pri-cci-o” He deliberately over exaggerated his lip movement as he said this, pointing to his chest at the same time. The robot turned his head sideways, trying to register what the Sprial was saying. “Ca-pri-chi...chi...” the robot attempted, in a voice that was tinged with an electronic buzz. The mechanical dragon was trying to form its lips and tongue to repeat back the sounds it heard. It took a few more tries and was able to finally utter, “Capriccio.”

“Yes! Capriccio!” the Spiral nodded vigorously. The Guardian gently raise a claw to point to himself, “To-bi-as.” The robot took less time to pause and then try to utter the Guardian’s name. “Rrr-to-bi-as, Tobias,” it finally reached the correct pronunciation. The two dragons cheered and shook each other’s hand in glee. “We did it!” whooped Tobiais. Capriccio gave a hearty laugh, “I honestly thought we’d never get this guy working.”

Then they looked back at their creation, who was still cocking his head from side to side, trying to register what they were saying. “Well, I think it’s proper to give you a name,” said Tobias gently. “Nay-me?” said the robot as its eyes adjusted to get the Guardian’s face more in focus. “I’d like to name him, if I may?” asked the Guardian to Capriccio. The Spiral knew that most of the work was Tobias’, and the Guardian was his mentor, so it only felt fair, “Certainly!”

“We all have musical names in this lair, bestowed upon us by Cassandra. If you are going to be fully part of our clan, as an equal dragon, you’ll need a musical name too,” said Tobias, and he paused to think, but only for a moment. “Techno! Your name will be Techno!” The newly named robot played with the name, which was much easier than the names of his makers. “Tech. No. Tech-no. Techno. Techno!” in which he pointed to himself with the last utterance of his name.

“Welcome to the clan, Techno,” said Capriccio, and both lovingly looked at Techno, like parents gazing at a newly hatched nest.
