By lantern light, a pair of Skydancers frantically searched their bags for an egg. The pair were fleeing the Beacon of the Radiant Eye; they had only just made it to the Wispwillow Grove. They had only the possessions they could carry including their most recent clutch of eggs. In the darkness they were unaccustomed to, one of their eggs was missing. The pair knew they couldn’t go back for it. They cried for the loss of their egg but carried on their flight, keeping an especially close eye on their two remaining eggs.

Meanwhile, the lost egg was kept warm in the light of the Sunbeam Ruins. It hatched in its time, a small Skydancer with no-one to welcome them to the world. A new hatchling with no guardian had no chance on their own. The little Skydancer died near where they hatched.

But they didn’t know, they simply woke up one day feeling lighter. With no other company, the little hatchling found some travellers. They didn’t speak to him, but he followed them all the way to their home in the Viridian Labyrinth. He was free to roam throughout their lair. His favourite place to be was with the other hatchlings. The dragons who took care of them were so kind and caring, they were gentle and sweet with the hatchlings. One of the caretakers called the hatchlings “mes chéris” and he liked the sound of it. The hatchlings around him grew up and were given names of their own, he grew with them, but remained Chérie.

As Chérie grew up, he learned a lot about the dragons of the lair. None of them ever spoke to him or acknowledged him in any way. He learned that male Skydancers had four antennae instead of two, so he hid all of his under a wolf cape. He passed his time in the clan’s conservatory, watching the plants grow and watching the denizens of the Nature lair. Dragons of all kind spent their time there, appreciating and tending to the myriad of plants.

He wondered why no dragons wanted to speak to him. He saw how other dragons treated each other, they were kind and loving. They became friends and spent their time together, eating, playing, or working. He wanted his own friends. He left the clan the same way he’d entered, without any notice. He kept the wolf cape though.

He wandered from clan to clan, no dragons in any of them stopped or spoke to him. Some of them even walked right through him which he thought was rather rude.

He became very discouraged, he wondered what was wrong with him, that no dragons wanted to be his friend. Perhaps he’d be alone forever…

Chérie aimlessly wandered the Tangled Wood. He heard a lone dragon and decided to follow them, this dragon could ignore him like everyone else if they were bothered by his presence. He struggled through the brambles and shook himself off.

The stranger was a Skydancer with a hat and a blue coat.

It took him a moment to realise that the stranger was speaking to him. No-one had ever spoken to him before. In his surprise, he was rather rude to the stranger. But the stranger still offered to share his food with him. He seemed kind and he told him about his clan where everyone was accepting and kind. If this dragon saw him and spoke to him, perhaps others in his clan would as well. It didn’t take much convincing to persuade him to join the stranger’s clan.

When they returned to the Skydancer’s lair, he was taken to a cavern with another dragon, a Spiral with glowing red eyes. He looked hungry. Dark claws were holding him to the ground. Before he could turn to ask what was going on, claws shot out of the ground and grabbed him too.

But the Spiral was sweet and he spoke to him. They talked about their lives, what led them here and where he hoped to go. Chérie began to realise that the Spiral had grown up in these caves, he’d never seen the sky. He chose the name Daisy, after a flower he liked as a hatchling. As they got to know each other, Chérie felt complete, like a part of himself had always been missing and he finally found it.

The Skydancer who introduced him to the clan came and spoke to him too. Chérie was trapped in the cave but with dragons who were kind to him. He told the Skydancer everything he could remember. Daisy spoke to the Skydancer too, but he didn’t seem very happy about it.

Eventually, the Skydancer stopped coming to see them, and an Imperial appeared with canopic jars. Chérie had seen similar jars in other clans’ hoards and they were always creepy. The Imperial observed them as the black claws that had held them for seasons fell away. Chérie rushed to the exit of their cave but was blocked by some invisible barrier. He scratched at it and cried, he could just barely see the way he’d come in to the caves, all those seasons ago.

It was all pointless, he laid down beside Daisy who hadn’t moved since the claws dropped him. He shuffled closer to him.

Daisy was a special dragon. Chérie knew it from his glowing eyes so he dared to reach out, touching his side.

He’d never felt anything like it, not even the ground beneath his feet or the wind supporting his wings. A shock went up his spine, and the two dragons curled around each other, nuzzling, Daisy squirming in that way that only Spirals do. What a blessing to touch, he thought. Chérie and Daisy were completely inseparable after that moment.

Other dragons appeared with canopic jars of their own brought by the Imperial, but he had Daisy, he didn’t need anyone else. Besides, Daisy seemed upset when he tried to talk to them.

━━━━━━━━━━━━

A distraught Spiral came into their cave. Daisy growled at him like he knew him but he did growl at anyone who came near them… The distressed Spiral seemed not to see them, as he rushed in and tried to smash a canopic jar. Chérie winced as he touched it, they were bad luck after all. The jar didn’t shatter as he threw it on the ground. A moment of thinking and the Spiral grabbed all of them, scurrying up and out of the cave. Chérie held onto Daisy as they were unknowingly dragged along with them.

Daisy was focused on the sky and on the lair around them but Chérie was focused on the Spiral, this was their chance to escape. The Spiral took them all to an alchemy laboratory, throwing one of the canopic jars into a cauldron. They nervously paced waiting, until a dragon sat back like a weight had been taken from him. He flared his wings and took off into the sky. The alchemist seemed to feel it too, even if he couldn’t see them. In his haste, to melt down all the jars, he dumped full cauldrons’ contents onto the floor of the lab.

Chérie saw Daisy experience freedom before he did. He unfolded his wings, but he held his claws out to Chérie, reassuring him. “I won’t leave you,” he said.

More lovely words had never been uttered.

A moment later, Chérie was free as well. He pulled Daisy into the sky with him. And they flew away from the lair that had kept them for so long. Daisy was looking up into the sky but Chérie dared a glance back, the Spiral who freed them scurried into a different part of the lair, his work done.

Chérie looked at his mate, experiencing the sky for the first time. His unadulterated joy was contagious and Chérie laughed with him as they flew. He was going to show him the whole world of Sornieth.
