Her body was assimilated by a fairy, essentially eaten alive via contact with the creatures skin.
Fairies excrete a highly acidic mucus from their skin, that when made contact with will make the victim stick to it and begin to melt, actively fusing the two together.
Basically being eaten alive. (Think like how an angler fish absorbs its mate) Its a gruesome process that lasts only about 10-15 minutes.
Once a fairy has consumed a victim it can imitate their voice as well as induce hallucinations in others, projecting the image of their victim as their own to lure in more prey.
Vera fell victim to a fairy, and if she were to ever return, its almost certain that it isn't truly her.
